The Level 3 Outdoor First Aid course is a comprehensive two‑day qualification designed for those who work or lead activities in outdoor, rural or remote environments, where emergency medical assistance may be delayed. It is particularly suitable for staff involved in outdoor learning, educational visits, expeditions, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, sports and adventurous activities, as well as site teams, volunteers and community organisations.
This course provides learners with the skills, knowledge and confidence to manage a wide range of serious injuries and medical emergencies in outdoor settings, with a strong focus on incident management, casualty care and decision‑making in challenging environments. Training is highly practical and scenario‑based, reflecting the realities of working away from immediate professional support.
Course content includes:
Incident and scene management in outdoor environments
Assessing and prioritising casualties
Managing unresponsive casualties and administering CPR
Control of bleeding and management of shock, including anaphylaxis
Head, spinal, chest and abdominal injuries
Fractures, sprains and soft tissue injuries
Burns, hypothermia, heat exhaustion and environmental factors
Medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and epilepsy
Moving casualties and summoning assistance in remote locations
The course is Ofqual regulated and meets the Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) Band 3 requirements. It also fulfils the first aid element of the expedition syllabus for the Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Successful learners achieve a Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid, valid for three years.
Training is available through open courses with published dates or as bespoke, in‑house delivery, making it ideal for schools, trusts and organisations delivering regular outdoor or off‑site activity.
