The Level 3 Qualification in Lowland Expedition Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification for teachers, youth workers, and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award instructors who want to gain formal recognition for leading lowland walks and overnight expeditions in the UK.
Delivered by our NGB qualified instructors, this course provides the professional knowledge, practical competence, and evidence base required to confidently plan, lead, and evaluate lowland expeditions within a school, college, or youth organisation setting.

What you’ll gain

Understanding when and how to use navigation technology appropriately

Planning and leading overnight lowland expeditions
Campcraft including tents, stoves, food planning and cooking
Equipment selection and maintenance
Environmental responsibility and low‑impact camping
Course structure & assessment (designed for working professionals)
The qualification requires 134 hours total, made up of:
65 hours tutor‑led learning
69 hours directed study
15 hours of assessed expedition leadership
Assessment is practical and supportive:
Continuous assessment throughout the course
Practical observation while leading walks and expeditions
Planning documentation (route cards, risk assessments)
Reflective evaluation recorded in a Delegate Evidence Record
No written exam
