Description

This isn't just a hot water bottle cosy! This is a hot water bottle cosy filled to the brim with all the basics skills you need to get started with crochet.

This 4 week course packs all the basic skills into one project. A wee taste of the 3 main crochet stitches (SC, HDC and DC - US terms) which we'll use to explore the foundation row, crocheting in rows, crocheting in the round, increasing, decreasing, colour work, simple decorative finishing and a spot of flower making.

There's lots of repetition, and there will be some homework along the way!!, but after 4 weeks you'll have hand crocheted your very own hot water bottle cosy and hopefully you'll be inspired to learn more about this beautiful craft.

Week 1 - 7 May | The Cosy - the foundation row, crochet in the round and increasing

Week 2 - 14 May | Stripes - colour work

Week 3 - 21 May | Flowers. Leaves & Bow Ties- crochet in the round and in rows and a bit of puff stitch!

Week 4 - 28 May | Final Flourishes - decreasing, decorative edges and detail

This workshop takes place in the Sew Silly Lily Crochet Cabin. I'll provide essential crochet refreshments and sweet things and you'll need to bring the materials listed below to crochet-along. It's ideal for absolute beginners, adventurous beginners, refreshing forgotten skills or maybe you just fancy some social crochet.

What you'll need to crochet-along. . .

  • a 4.0mm crochet hook

  • about 50g of double knit yarn in a main colour and extra yarn for colour work and decorative details*

  • a couple of stitch markers (safety pins or yarn scraps will do)

  • scissors and a big eye needle

*For my main yarn I used Sheepjes Colour Crafter in 1824 Enschede. You won't need much of the other yarns so ideal for using up any odds and ends if you have them.

Once you're booked I'll be in touch to confirm the address and train/ parking options.

Taking this workshop is me, Sharon Goodwin from Sew Silly Lily. I'm a graduate of Glasgow School of Art with a lifelong passion for textiles, craft and design.

When it comes to crochet, I'm totally self-taught and still discovering. I really want to share all the best skills, tips and techniques I have learned - everything I wish someone had been able to share with me from the beginning of my journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this CAL suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! If you're learning a new craft I always think it's way more important to start with something you actually want to make regardless of difficulty. You'll be more inclined to push yourself, you'll enjoy the process way more and hopefully you'll love the finished make and be inspired to learn more.
