Beginner level
Learning to crochet in the round is essential for all sorts of crochet projects - amigurumi, softies, hats, bags, granny squares . . . I won't pretend it's easy, but it's not as tricky as you might think!
The 3 bears will be a fun introduction to the principles of crocheting continuously in the round. We'll look at magic rings, even increasing and the single crochet stitch (US terms). We'll also have a little go at other ways to crochet in the round, try some join-as-you-go and creating fancy edging using the single crochet stitch in reverse (crab stitch).
Depending on your ability you can join me for Week 1 then finish off in your own time, or you can come back for seconds and we can finish off together the following week.
Week 1 | The ears and the start of the bear basket
Week 2 | The muzzle and finishing off
You'll need to have access to ZOOM and the materials listed below to crochet-along. This is a great make for absolute beginners, adventurous beginners looking to push their crochet to the next level, but also fab for refreshing forgotten skills or if you just fancy having a go. Classes are kept small so it's not too overwhelming and everyone gets plenty attention and the opportunity to ask questions.
What you'll need to craft along . . .
yarn - anything from double-knit to super-chunky*
a crochet hook that's around 1/2 the size recommended for your yarn
other yarn for features and embroidered details
stitch markers
2 x 4mm round black beads
a big eye needle and a fine eye needle
black thread
scissors
a bowl of porridge, or a cuppa tea and a biscuit
*:o) I used King Cole Big Value Super Chunky with a 5.0mm crochet hook (10.0mm recommended) for daddy bear. Mummy bear’s crocheted with Drops Andes and a 4.0mm hook (9.0mm recommended) and baby bear uses Drops Cotton Light doubled up with a 3.0mm hook (4.0mm recommended). If you're an absolute beginner I'd recommend going for a chunky or super-chunky yarn to start off with.
Absolutely! If you're learning a new craft I always think it's way more important to start with something you actually want to make regardless of difficulty. You'll be more inclined to push yourself, you'll enjoy the process way more and hopefully you'll love the finished make and be inspired to learn more.
Nope! There won't be enough time for some people to finish the make in just 1 week, so the 2nd workshop and extra help is there if you feel you need it.
I know that sometimes you might just need a little reminder of how things are done and you're happy to follow the pattern and finish off without me.
I’m Sharon. I've been sewing and making stuff for as long as I can remember and went on to study Embroidered Textile design at Glasgow School of Art, but my interest in textiles goes way beyond stitch and I have a range of textiley skills which I bring to my work. <...
