A rear-tipping dumper (also known as Articulated Dump Truck or ADT) is a construction vehicle used to transport and unload materials like soil, gravel, or debris. It has a large open bed at the back that tilts to dump its load. This vehicle is common on construction sites, in mining, and other industries where moving loose materials is needed. The operator drives the dumper to a location, then raises the bed to tip out the load from the rear. Rear-tipping dumpers are valued for their versatility, ease of use, and ability to manoeuvre in rough or tight spaces.
To operate a rear-tipping dumper well, it’s important to understand the industry, including the risks and responsibilities of being a plant operator. You should be familiar with the manufacturer’s handbook and other helpful information. Operators need to identify the major parts of the machine and explain how they work, along with understanding the key controls.
Before using the dumper, perform all pre-operational checks as required by the manufacturer and by law. This includes using the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety gear specific to the dumper. Make sure the work area is safe through necessary checks.
Prepare the dumper by ensuring it’s in good working order. Safe and efficient operation is key, which means being able to manoeuvre the dumper over different terrains, on slopes, and in tight spaces. Operators must know how to position the dumper to receive loads, secure those loads, move them to new locations, and dump them safely.
Throughout the operation, consider the environment. Operators should also understand how to load and unload the dumper for transport. Lastly, follow all end-of-shift and shutdown procedures to leave the equipment safe and ready for the next use.
