You should be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions. This includes understanding the steering, driving, and braking controls and their respective functions. Safety is paramount, so ensure you can safely mount and dismount the machine.

Be proficient in starting and stopping the engine, and manoeuvre the machine safely across various terrains, including open and confined areas. Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area to ensure a safe operating environment.

Familiarize yourself with the machine’s safe working loads, lifting capacity chart, and various lifting configurations and working ranges. Understand different lifting procedures and the types of tasks each procedure is suited for. Recognize and explain the concept of the centre of gravity and calculate estimated weights of loads.

Identify any potential overhead or proximity hazards and take appropriate measures to address them. Communicate effectively with the slinger/signaller by agreeing on signal codes, hand signals, direction of movement, and safe working practices, including the placement zone.

Ensure the excavator is in a safe condition before fitting any attachments. Verify load integrity and security by conducting a trial lift. When lifting and moving loads, do so in a controlled manner to minimize uncontrolled movement and ensure safety.

Consider environmental impacts during operation, and complete all out-of-service and securing procedures at the end of your shift to ensure the machine is properly maintained and ready for future use.
