Description

2026 is set to bring the Norman world back into sharp focus. With the Bayeux Tapestry coming to the UK for the first time, and 2027 heralding the ‘Year of the Normans’, there will be no shortage of headlines, documentaries and commentary – but how much of it reflects the latest research?

Our new short course,
The World of the Normans, offers something richer. Bringing together leading UK-based scholars, it moves beyond the familiar narratives of 1066 to explore the wider Norman world – from the politics and culture of Edward the Confessor’s court to the expansion of Norman influence across the British Isles and into southern Italy and the Mediterranean. Along the way, it challenges long-held stereotypes, engages with new scholarship, and examines the evidence that shapes our understanding of this period – including the enduring legacy of the Bayeux Tapestry itself.

Sessions include:

29 September: The settlement of Normandy: Family relations, customs and marriage | Leonie Hicks

6 October: Edward the Confessor - A francophone court and the role of Emma | Levi Roach

13 October: Southern Italy - the early Norman conquest 1000-1100 | Paul Odlfield

20 October: The Conquest, the politics and the recent research on the succession | Levi Roach
