This session will equip you with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to meet legal aid contractual obligations from the start of your new Crime Contract. In this course we will cover:
Contract structure and key obligations
Office and supervision standards
Duty solicitor accreditation and rota rules
Use of agents and designated fee earners; and instructing advocates
Digital compliance
Managing audits, KPIs, and contract variations – including the initial Contract Manager visit which usually takes place within 3 months or so of the Contract start date
Legal Aid Applications and Billing

This practical session is tailored for legal professionals, practice managers, and support staff who have recently entered into the 2025 LAA Crime Contract. It is ideal for anyone responsible for delivering legal aid services or ensuring contract compliance within their organisation.
Course notes will be provided to all delegates which may be useful for ongoing reference or cascade training.

Steve joined DG Legal after leaving the Legal Aid Agency in August 2016. In his 17 years at the LAA, he worked in the audit team as both auditor and manager and was a Contract Manager for several years.
Steve is also a certified SQM auditor and undertakes audits on behalf of Recognising Excellence as well as running training sessions for the SQM Audit Team periodically.
