Introduction

This course is a recognised route into the gas industry without having an NVQ or apprenticeship in plumbing and/or gas. Before you can start your Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) domestic initial assessment you will need to complete the MLP course if you do not hold any current gas qualifications. This course is approved by IGEM and is certificated by LCL Awards.

On completion and pass of your MLP and ACS assessment, you will receive your ACS certificate from LCL Awards. This certificate will enable you to apply to gas safe to become a gas safe registered gas engineer.

It is beneficial to have a suitable background in mechanical, plumbing or engineering for example in order to complete this course, however previous experience of working in the gas industry is not essential. We conduct a short informal interview assessment to assess whether you are a suitable candidate to join the course.

Rest assured, if we feel during the interview stage that you aren’t ready for this course you will be advised.

How does the MLP work?

Step 1: Enrol on MLP

Step 2: Complete classroom training

Step 3: Complete onsite portfolio

Step 4: Take ACS assessment

Step 5: Receive ACS certificate (if you achieve a PASS)

Step 6: Join the Gas safe register

You will complete a series of training exercises and exams. These will be theoretical and practical based training sessions at our centre. The length of training required will be individually assessed based on your previous knowledge and experience.

Alongside this you will complete an onsite gas portfolio. You will need a gas safe registered engineer to work with to complete your portfolio

What does the gas portfolio entail?

In order to complete your gas work portfolio you will need to complete a number of days on domestic gas boilers. You will need to be accompanied by a qualified gas engineer who will guide you through the different processes of gas rating the appliance, servicing the appliance, using a flue gas analyser etc. You will then be expected to record the task you carried out, take photos and input the results you found into your gas portfolio.

Ventilation
Pressure, Flow, Tightness Testing and Purging
Domestic Pipework Installation
Heating Design, Heat Loss and Comfort Conditions
Installation and Servicing of Domestic Central Heating and Hot Water Appliances

What happens once the MLP course is completed?

Once your MLP training and your portfolio is complete and signed off by our internal quality assurance team and you’ve passed your ACS assessment, you will then be a qualified gas engineer who can apply to join the gas safe register via gas safe.

What qualification will I receive? Is it like an NVQ?

The managed learning programme is an accredited certification scheme (ACS). This is a recognised qualification that is not an NVQ but has the same merit. Once completed, you will hold a qualification in:

CCN1, CENWAT, CPA1 which means you’ll be able to work on domestic natural gas boilers.

Do you offer flexible payment options?

Payment options – 0% interest

We offer interest free payments for the managed learning programme. We offer this option through ourselves, no third party affordability checks are used. However It is important that you are certain that your circumstances are not due to change and that you will be able to afford the full balance of the course as any payments made will not be refunded and you will not gain certification if the balance of the course is not paid.

The balance of the course must be paid in full before we can issue your certificate.

Syllabus

Step one: Classroom based training at our centre.

Time frame: Approximately 8 months (Part time)

Our operating hours for our centre based learning is Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm

Step two: Portfolio

Realistic time frame – 6 months to complete.

Portfolio building is a very important part of this course. You must have a gas safe registered engineer to work with to complete this course.

Step 3: Final ACS assessment

Time frame: 5 days

Your ACS assessment is completed at our centre where you originally came to train. You will take theoretical and practical exams in the following subjects

CCN1 and CPA1 – Core gas safety and flue gas analysing

CENWAT – Central heating and boilers

Step 4: Additional qualifications

If you would like to add additional qualifications to your ticket, you can come back to us 12 months after completion to add domestic gas cookers and fires. Please ask and we can discuss this further with you
