Description

About This Classroom Training

Hydrogen’s unique molecular properties make it an ideal medium for storing large amounts of energy for extended periods and enabling the transportation of energy across countries and industry sectors. However, hydrogen production sites are often located in areas with favorable production conditions, such as low-cost electricity, water availability for electrolysis, natural gas with or without carbon capture capabilities, and other suitable resources. These production sites are rarely situated at or near the points of use, necessitating the storage and transportation of hydrogen from production to consumer sites.

This training course focuses on state-of-the-art solutions for hydrogen storage and transportation, encompassing technological, economic, and safety aspects. It highlights the challenges associated with the unique nature of hydrogen gas, including its low density, high tendency for leakage, and flammability, which impose stringent requirements on storage solutions.

Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge about the various methods for storing and transporting hydrogen, and the use of pipelines for transportation. The course will cover the technical details of these methods, including container types, balance of plant systems, geological storage options, and the operational aspects of filling and discharging containers. Moreover, the training will address the factors influencing the selection of appropriate storage and transportation methods, taking into account specific requirements, applications, and suitability considerations. Case studies and real-world examples, such as hydrogen refueling stations and industry standards like SAE J2601, will be discussed to provide practical insights.

This course will be delivered via face-to-face over 3-day sessions, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per dayCourse Duration: 24 hours in total, 24 CPD points. This course can also be delivered through Virtual Inspector Led Training.

Trainer

Your expert instructor possesses a Dipl.-Ing. (Univ.) in Materials Science from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany, an MBA from Henley Management College in the UK, and holds the prestigious title of Six Sigma Black Belt. With a remarkable career spanning more than 27 years, he is recognised as an esteemed authority in the field of Hydrogen Technologies. His areas of specialisation include hydrogen generation, storage, transportation, and distribution, as well as electrochemical conversion systems like electrolysers and fuel cells.

His professional journey includes a 5-year tenure as a scientific researcher at the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research in Baden-Württemberg, Germany (ZSW). He then embarked on a noteworthy 14-year career at SGL Carbon, a global leader in carbon and graphite manufacturing, where he played various pivotal roles. His primary focus was on the development and production of Gas Diffusion Media.

Your expert instructor’s expertise in hydrogen storage and transportation systems is further evidenced by his previous role at SGL Group, a leading carbon and graphite manufacturer. He spearheaded the technological aspects of the company’s fuel cell component offerings, including bipolar plates and gas diffusion layers. His contributions helped establish the SIGRACET® brand as a world leader in the field.

Following his tenure at SGL Carbon, he spent 8 significant years with BMW AG, serving as a Technology Manager within the hydrogen fuel cell passenger car program, known as iX5 Hydrogen. In this pivotal role, he was responsible for overseeing quality and safety management across the entire hydrogen system enabling the release and certification of fuel cell electric vehicles for public roads. This encompassed tanks, hydrogen supply systems, fuel cell systems, and in-house hydrogen infrastructure.

Your expert instructor’s contributions also extend to his work with the Hydrogen Academy, where he has created educational materials. The training materials covering the hydrogen value chain, hydrogen economy, storage, transportation, fuel cell technology, and other industrial applications. He has conducted professional training sessions on this material for clients of the Hydrogen Academy and for a training company located in northern Germany. Furthermore, he has earned recognition as a tentative trainer (successfully passing all assessments) for Hydrogen Technology, Quality, and Safety Management at TÜV Süd Akademie GmbH. Therefore, over the span of 3 years, he has been actively engaged as a freelance educator, offering comprehensive courses that encompass the entire hydrogen value chain. His extensive experience and knowledge make him a valuable asset in advancing sustainable hydrogen storage, transportation, and distribution solutions.
