The relationship between early trauma and severe mental illness is now well established. The link between post-traumatic stress and psychotic symptoms has also been demonstrated, as well as the role of adverse events in bipolar disorder. Beyond these diagnoses, a greater traumatic background is associated with greater severity in any pathology. Therefore, treatment with trauma-oriented therapies such as EMDR is particularly relevant in these cases. In this workshop, we will review the interrelationship between trauma and severe mental illness and the specifics of its application in these conditions, in a practical and applicable way. It will be illustrated with clinical vignettes and case descriptions.

This workshop aims to explore the multidimensional relationship between trauma and severe mental health symptoms. Each topic will be supported by clinical case examples how EMDR can be applied in practice.

This workshop is suitable for anyone who has completed all of their standard EMDR training.

This workshop aims not only to provide theoretical knowledge but also to equip participants with practical EMDR interventions that can be applied in clinical settings.

Anabel Gonzalez:

Anabel Gonzalez, MD. PhD. is psychiatrist and psychotherapist, trained in various orientations as Group Therapy, Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Systemic Therapy and trauma-oriented therapies. PhD in Medicine and specialist in Criminology. She is Past President in the EMDR Spanish Association. She worked at the University Hospital of A Coruña (CHUAC), coordinating the Trauma and Dissociation Program, oriented to patients with severe traumatization. Is an active docent, giving training on dissociative disorders, trauma, attachment and emotional regulation. She is accredited trainer of EMDR therapy. She participates as a guest lecturer in the Master of EMDR Therapy in the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED). At the level of research, she is Doctoral Tutor in the University of A Coruña and directs several projects in the field of trauma and treatment with EMDR for various disorders. He has published numerous articles on dissociation, trauma and EMDR, and is author/co-author of several books, the last of them I am not myself: Understanding Complex Trauma, Attachment and Dissociation and EMDR and Emotional Processing: Working with Severely Dysregulated Patients.
