Facilitated by registered nurses with first hand clinical experience, this Mouth Care and Oral Hygiene Training 1/2 day blended learning course allows attendees to demonstrate theoretical and practical simulation within a classroom or virtual environment.
Participants will further their knowledge and skills in mouth care and oral hygiene across varied healthcare settings.
Effective oral hygiene practices (mouth care) are necessary to ensure the maintenance of effective oral health through the removal of bacterial plaque, dry mouth care and denture care. Good oral health is important for eating and drinking, communication, the absence of pain and infection, and paramount for dignity and comfort. There is increasing evidence linking poor oral health to systemic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hospital acquired pneumonia.
Identify conditions that a person could develop due to poor oral hygiene
Discuss the impact that oral/dental conditions could have on a person’s quality of life
Outline the range of equipment that is available to use to deliver mouth care
Demonstrate undertaking an assessment of a person’s oral hygiene and providing appropriate mouth care
Identify a healthy mouth
Be able to tailor oral health care to a patients/residents needs
Be aware of how to implement and update a care plan and know when to refer for additional help
