Designed for:
Engineers, technicians, supervisors, inspectors and setters who require understanding and some practical experience in basic gear measurement and cutting.
The course is for delegates who may have little or no prior knowledge of the subject but assume they are able to understand basic machine tool operations and trigonometry. Please bring a calculator with you on the first day.
Objectives:
On completion of the course delegates should:
· Understand basic spur and helical gear theory and terminology
· Be able to carry out basic calculations for the manufacture and measurement of gears
· Understand how spur an helical gears are cut by hobbing and shaping
· Have some practical experience in setting up, producing and measuring gears produced by hobbing and shaping
· Have a comprehensive set of notes and reference data
Course Content:
Basic involute gear theory, terms and definitions for spur and helical gears including:
1. Gear terms and definitions
2. Introduction to the involute from and its construction
3. Introduction to the involute function and tables
4. Calculations on the above
Practical work on the measurement of gears including calculations on the following:-
1. Chordal tooth settings for gear tooth vernier
2. Constant chord settings to gear tooth vernier
3. Base tangent micrometer settings
4. Distance over roller measurement
Basic principles of gear hobbing and shaping
Selection of index and feed change gears
Practical work setting up and producing spur and helical gears by hobbing and shaping using the following machines:
1. Maxicut 2A shaping machine
2. Sykes H150 hobbing machine
