Young people’s social justice projects: Afternoon cuppa session
Wednesday 4 February, 2pm - 3.30pm
In a Kids in Museums survey about what young people think about museums, 88% of respondents said they felt it was important for museums to address social justice issues. Young people want museums to tell stories that are relevant to them, give them space to think about big questions and understand their place in the world.
Join us for an informal virtual session to hear inspiring case studies from the three organisations who were shortlisted for the Best Museum Youth Project: Social Justice category, as part of the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award 2025.
In this session, we will:
Learn more about the importance of social justice work with young people,
Hear inspiring from case studies from
Hannah Shury-Smith, Learning and Engagement Officer, plus Jayden McFarlane, member of the Youth Programme from the Black Cultural Archives, the category winners. They will talk about their Black LGBTQ+ project, which involved creating oral histories with elders from the local community.
Angela Massafra, Learning and Access Curator, plus Iman Afaq, member of the Intercultural Youth Group at Glasgow Life Museums. They will share more about the anti-racism and decolonisation work the Youth Group has been involved with.
Amy Hammett, Community Curator from Wiltshire Museum will talk about their work with young people from the local Youth Justice Service.
Create informal opportunities for attendees to discuss reflect on the session and share about their own work with young people.
Please bring along your own cuppa and snacks!
