1. Able to explain the aims of immunisation and describe national vaccine policy and schedules

2. Able to explain the immune response to vaccines and describe how vaccines provide protection

3. Able to describe and recognise the main features of vaccine preventable diseases and the nature and frequency of their acute and long-term complications

4. Has knowledge of the different types of vaccines used

5. Knows about relevant and current issues/controversies in immunisation

6. Can effectively communicate with patients, parents, carers and others about immunisation

7. Understands the legal aspects of immunisation

8. Follows correct procedures for storage and handling of vaccines

9. Able to reconstitute and administer vaccines correctly

10. Able to manage anaphylaxis and other adverse events appropriately

11. Correctly documents and reports all vaccines given

12. Able to identify and implement strategies for improving vaccine uptake


Course Objectives:

Understand the principles of immunisation: Familiarise yourself with the immune response, immunity types (active and passive), and the concept of herd immunity.

Learn about vaccine types and components: Gain knowledge about different types of vaccines, including live attenuated, inactivated, subunit, and conjugate vaccines, as well as vaccine components like adjuvants and preservatives.

Acquire skills in vaccine administration: Develop hands-on skills in safely and accurately administering vaccines through various routes, including intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.

Recognize vaccine-preventable diseases: Understand the diseases that can be prevented through vaccination, their epidemiology, and the impact of vaccines on disease incidence.

Address vaccine safety and adverse events: Learn about vaccine safety monitoring systems, common vaccine side effects, and strategies for managing adverse events.
