Course Overview:

The "An Understanding of Oxygen Administration" course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills required for safe and effective oxygen therapy. Oxygen administration is a critical intervention used to provide supplemental oxygen to patients with respiratory conditions or those in need of increased oxygen levels. Course Content:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Outline the indications and contraindications of oxygen administration

2. Outline health problems that impair function - referring to individual’s health care plans

3. List the relevant anatomy and physiology

4. Explain the risks and benefits of oxygen administration

5. Describe the checks, safeguards, and precautions relevant to the procedure and equipment

6. Outline the importance of following the individual prescription / health care plan

7. List the monitoring and observation steps required 

8. Explain the importance of "hand-over", communication and record keeping

9. Outline emergencies and circumstances that would require urgent medical care and treatment from the emergency services 

10. Practice adrenaline oxygen administration utilising a range of delivery methods in simulation

Course Objectives:

1. Recognise the importance of oxygen administration: Understand the significance of providing supplemental oxygen to maintain adequate oxygenation and alleviate respiratory distress.

2. Learn about oxygen delivery systems: Familiarise yourself with different oxygen delivery systems, including nasal cannulas, masks (simple, venturi, non-rebreather), and high-flow systems.

3. Acquire skills in oxygen assessment and titration: Develop hands-on skills in assessing a patient's oxygenation needs, determining appropriate oxygen flow rates, and adjusting delivery systems.

4. Understand oxygen therapy complications: Learn about potential complications of oxygen therapy, such as oxygen toxicity, absorption atelectasis, and drying of respiratory mucosa.

5. Address infection control measures: Gain knowledge about infection prevention protocols when using oxygen delivery devices, including proper cleaning and disinfection.

6. Recognise the importance of monitoring: Understand the significance of monitoring patients undergoing oxygen therapy, including assessing respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and signs of improvement or deterioration.

7. Develop communication skills: Learn effective communication techniques to educate patients, caregivers, and family members about oxygen therapy, its purpose, and potential complications.

8. Ethical considerations and patient-centered care: Explore ethical issues related to patient autonomy, informed consent, and providing care with empathy, respect, and dignity.

Assessment and Certification:

Participants will undergo practical skills assessments, written assessments, and potentially scenario-based evaluations to evaluate their understanding and competence in oxygen administration. Successful completion will lead to a certification of achievement in "An Understanding of Oxygen Administration."
