Description

This 8-hour class prepares students with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance the safety of both workers and drivers in a work zone. Students who successfully pass the open-book knowledge exam with a score of 80% or better will receive a Washington State Flagger certification card that is valid for 3 years and can be used in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana.

What you'll learn

  • The requirements for becoming a flagger

  • The agencies and regulations that govern flagging

  • The clothing and equipment that you’ll need to have on the job

  • What goes into setting up a Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) zone, including warning devices, spacing, and where a flagger fits in

  • Flagger placement and how to signal using a STOP/SLOW paddle, flashlight, or red flag

  • How to keep yourself and others safe in the work zone

  • Special situations such as flagging at intersections, roundabouts, and railroad crossings

Requirements

  • Age: Certified Washington State Flaggers must be at least 18 years old. You may be permitted to complete the Washington State Flagger certification course prior to turning 18, but you will not receive your certification, nor will you be eligible to work as a Flagger, until after you have turned 18.

  • Physical requirements: For a list of physical requirements and demands that pertain to flaggers, please CLICK HERE. Please note that your employer's policy may have fewer, additional, or differing requirements than those listed. Check with your employer to ensure you are familiar with the physical demands and requirements that pertain to you.

Documentation

You must bring photo identification to class. State- or government-issued identification (such as a state ID card, driver license, or passport) is preferred.

Schedule

Students should arrive at least 15 minutes before class so that they can get checked in. A 30-minute lunch and short morning/afternoon breaks will be provided. During the final portion of the class, students will complete the Washington State Flagger certification exam.

Student materials

Student materials will be provided to you during class at no additional charge.

Certification

A Washington State Flagger certification will be awarded to students who complete the following:

  • Attend the full 8-hour Flagger certification course

  • Provide photo ID verifying their identity and required minimum age

  • Score 80% or better on the certification exam
