This course is designed for Healthcare Assistants and Registered Nurses who support individuals living with a stoma in the community, hospital or care setting.
The session provides a clear understanding of different types of stomas, why they are formed, and how to recognise the differences in output and care needs.
Learners will also gain hands-on practical experience in emptying and changing stoma appliances, including measuring and cutting the template correctly, protecting peristomal skin, and identifying early signs of complications.
The training promotes safe, confident and person-centred stoma care, in line with UK best practice and local care plans.
By the end of this course learners will be able to:
Knowledge & Understanding
Explain what a stoma is and why a person may require one.
Identify the three main stoma types: colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy.
Describe how output differs depending on stoma type.
Understand different stoma formations: end stoma, loop stoma, double-barrel stoma.
Describe factors that affect hydration and diet in people with a stoma, especially ileostomy.
Outline common causes of odour and strategies to prevent/manage it.
Demonstrate how to empty a stoma bag safely and maintain dignity.
Demonstrate how to change a stoma appliance, including:
Measuring the stoma
Cutting the template correctly
Protecting peristomal skin
Safely set up a urostomy night drainage system and identify concerns.
Differentiate between:
Understand when referral to a Stoma Care Nurse is required for appliance changes (e.g., convexity, leaks, skin damage).
Recognise healthy vs irritated peristomal skin.
Identify early warning signs requiring escalation (e.g., leakage, soreness, dehydration, infection indicators).
Provide basic advice on clothing, bathing, travel, work, and daily activities.
Signpost individuals to appropriate UK stoma support organisations and healthcare professionals.
