Course Description
This course provides healthcare professionals and carers with a clear understanding of Huntington’s Disease and the practical skills required to support individuals safely, confidently, and compassionately.
Huntington’s Disease is a progressive, inherited neurological condition affecting movement, thinking, emotions, and behaviour. This training explores the condition in a structured and accessible way, linking symptoms to care, decision-making, and professional responsibilities.
The course promotes person-centred, dignified care in line with recognised good practice and NICE guidance, alongside relevant UK legislation.
Course Overview
This session covers:
· What Huntington’s Disease is and how it is inherited
· The genetic cause explained simply (DNA and protein changes)
· Disease progression and stages
· Motor, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural symptoms
· Medication awareness and emerging treatments (including gene therapy overview)
· Swallowing, nutrition, and safety considerations
· Emotional impact on individuals and families
· Multidisciplinary team (MDT) working
· Mental Capacity Act (2005) and decision-making
· Recognising deterioration and when to escalate concerns
· Case study discussions to apply learning in practice
Key Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
· Explain what Huntington’s Disease is, including its genetic cause
· Recognise common motor, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural symptoms
· Understand how the condition progresses over time
· Identify how medication and emerging treatments support symptom management (awareness level)
· Apply person-centred approaches that promote dignity and independence
· Understand the principles of the Mental Capacity Act (2005) in relation to decision-making
· Recognise when and how to escalate concerns appropriately
· Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
