Neuro EMDR: Adapting EMDR to clients with cognitive difficulties

Neuro EMDR is a recent development in how EMDR can be adapted to work with clients with brain injury and cognitive difficulties. A recent article published in EMDR quarterly by Hutchins & Proudlock (2023) Reviewed the case study evidence base for using EMDR with clients who have sustained a mild traumatic brain injury - https://etq.emdrassociation.org.uk/paper/neuro-emdr-applying-emdr-therapy-with-clients-who-have-impaired-cognitive-abilities/ In addition the approach has been used to treat PTSD in a client with Severe TBI (Hutchins, Simblett, 2024). 

There may be many clients we see in routine clinical practice who have sustained a mild brain injury or experience difficulties in their attention or memory. Dr Hutchins has further adapted EMDR to work with clients who have moderate to severe brain injury and he will illustrate this with a specific client video which demonstrates this. Learning outcomes will include:

1. For participants to gain a basic understanding of neuro anatomy.

2. For participants to gain an understanding of different cognitive domains and how these relate to the practice of EMDR and the adaptive information processing theory

3. For participants to develop skills in cognitive rehabilitation strategies which are designed to help clients who have cognitive problems.

4. For participants to learn how cognitive rehabilitation strategies can be used throughout the EMDR standard 8 phase protocol

5. For participants to see how EMDR can be adapted to clients with moderate to severe brain injury through video material.

6. For participants to consider cases that they are working with and to use an additional case formulation tool to aid in adaptation.

The event has been awarded 6 CPD credits by the EMDR Association UK. The plan is for the event to be interactive and for plenty of time for discussion and case formulation/consideration of how Neuro EMDR may benefit their clients.

The event will be recorded and it will be available for up to 90 days after it has taken place.
