Having spent many years working with children and seeing the scrapes and dangers they can get themselves into, it was always important to me to have First Aid training in the workplace – should the inevitable occur. A blocked airway can kill someone in three to four minutes, but it can take more than eight minutes for an ambulance to arrive. So a simple procedure such as opening someone’s airway can save their life whilst waiting for emergency help to arrive. Thousands of people are dying each year in situations where first aid could have made the difference; this includes nearly 900 people who choke to death, 2’500 who asphyxiate from a blocked airway and 29’000 who die from heart attacks.

Eden’s Trust (registered charity No. 1136092) was set up by Elli Galvani after her daughter, Eden Galvani-Skeete, was tragically killed at a five star resort in Turkey in 2006 when an entertainment stunt went wrong. As the evening got underway, a wall of fire was lit but when a waiter tried to light a second line of fire, the bottle of flammable liquid he was holding caught alight and exploded, sending fireballs into the audience. Eden took the brunt of the explosion and was on fire from head to toe, suffering 70% burns. Two days later on 31 July 2006, after suffering two heart attacks and kidney failure, Eden died. She was just six years old. As Elli tried to come to terms with Eden’s death, she became painfully aware of a gap in specialised counselling so decided to set up support/survival groups and workshops especially for people who have lost a child. The groups, launched in May 2013, are FREE to attend thanks to special funding sourced by Elli. More information can be found on our Support Groups page. We also support bereaved children in a school setting and offer  training courses to school staff on bereavement counselling and benefits of early intervention.'

Reducing low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is the priority in managing patients with severe dyslipidaemia (cholesterol abnormality) and at high risk of cardiovascular (CV) death and disability. Yet even when treated with potent statins, many patients fail to achieve LDL-cholesterol targets and therefore their risk of accelerated atherosclerosis and CV death remains high. This problem is particularly critical in patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) (the most commonly occurring genetic condition in the world). People with FH typically have very high LDL cholesterol levels on treatment, and consequently, are at very high risk of premature and sudden CV death, myocardial infarction and stroke. Additionally, some patients are unable to tolerate statins – particularly at higher doses – and, therefore, do not achieve LDL-cholesterol goals. What is the importance of PCSK9? Discovered in 2003,1 PCSK9 is a protein made by the liver which increases the removal of LDL receptors from the surface of liver cells. These LDL receptors are critically important in removal of serum LDL-cholesterol from the circulation. People with so-called ‘gain of function’ PCSK9 mutations over-express PCSK9, and therefore have very high plasma levels of LDL cholesterol and are at very risk of atherosclerosis and CV mortality and morbidity.2 In contrast, people with so-called ‘loss of function’ PCSK9 mutations, have very LDL cholesterol levels and reduced risk for heart disease.3 What is PCSK9 inhibition? Different approaches to lowering PCSK9 are now licensed. These include fully human monoclonal antibodies (alirocumab, evolocumab) and a small-interfering RNA therapy (inclisiran). Trials show that these PCSK9 inhibitors reduce LDL cholesterol levels by about 50-60 percent - a significantly greater effect than that achieved with currently available therapies – either when given alone or in combination. These LDL cholesterol lowering effects have been consistently across a broad group of patients, including those with familial hypercholesterolaemia in clinical trials.4 Which clinical settings will benefit from the availability of PCSK9 inhibitors? These treatments offer the potential to reduce cardiovascular risk in patients whose clinical needs cannot be satisfied by current therapy. These include: Patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia – an inherited disorder of lipid metabolism with a very high risk of early CV death or morbidity, if not diagnosed or treated early Patients who cannot tolerate statins, who therefore remain at high risk of CV events such as heart attacks and strokes Patients with established heart disease who have not achieved LDL-cholesterol goals despite current therapies

Paediatric First Aid - A two day course, suitable for people working with children and babies, in any working environment including schools, nurseries, after school clubs, day care etc. The course covers the following: Allergic reaction, Amputation, Asthma, Bleeding, Broken Bones, Burns and Scolds, Choking, CPR, Croup, Diabetes, Drowning, Electric Shock, Epilepsy, Eye Injury, Febrile Convulsions, Head Injury, Heat Stroke, Hypothermia, Meningitis, Nosebleed, Poisoning, Recovery Position, Resuscitation, Seizures, Shock, Sickle Cell, Smoke Inhalation, Spinal Injury, Sprains, Strains, and Unconsciousness. Defibrillation (CPR and AED) - A half day course, many more public areas, supermarkets, clubs and businesses now have these devices. To attend this course delegates do not have to be first aid trained. The course covers: Abnormal Heart Rhythms, Angina, Chain of Survival, Children AED usage, Choking, CPR, CPR with an AED device, Heart Attack, Heart Rhythms, Hygiene during CPR, Post Traumatic Stress, Recovery Position, Resuscitation with an AED, Safety using an AED, Survival Rates, Unconsciousesness, Ventricular Fibrillation, Reporting AED Usage. Basic Life Support - This course is a half day course and suited to delegates who want basic knowledge of actions to take in any emergency and how to deal with major accidents and injuries. The course covers the following: Adult Child and Infant Resuscitation, Communication and Casualty Care, Looking after yourself and the Casualty, Treatment of Severe Bleeding and Chest Pain, Treatment of Choking in Adults, Children and Infants and Treatment of an Unconscious Casualty. Requalification - The course is a two day course and suited to those candidates who require to renew their nationally accredited award in First Aid at Work. First Aid for Mental Health Course Level 1 - Awareness course: This ½-Day course is run in a fun and engaging way, and is aimed at providing learners with the knowledge to identify suspected mental health conditions and the skills to start a conversation and be able to signpost the person towards professional help. (4.5 hours) First Aid for Mental Health Course Level 2 - This 1-Day course covers the content of the Level 1 course aimed at providing learners with the knowledge to identify suspected mental health conditions and the skills to start a conversation and be able to signpost the person towards professional help) but also expands on the effects of drugs and alcohol, incorporates the First Aid for Mental Health Action Plan and covers ways in which a positive mental health culture can be supported within a workplace. (7 hours) First Aid for Mental Health Course Level 3 - A 2-Day course goes into detail on a wide range of mental health conditions and the support and help provided by healthcare professionals. It covers the content of both the Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications but is aimed at Trainer/Assessors and/or supervisor level within the workplace. (7 hours each day). Pet First Aid – A half day course : Aim of the course, The vet and your role in first aid, keeping your pet safe in an emergency, car accidents, pet proofing your home, communication and care of your pet, how pets show pain, checking your pet’s health, restraint of a pet in need and the use of a muzzle, breathing and respiratory problems including choking, dog CPR , drowning , shock , pet first aid kits, broken bones , spinal injury and moving an injured pet , controlling bleeding , dressings and bandages , paw problems , ears, eyes and mouth , Illnesses , poisoning , bite and stings , burns and temperature related problems , the older dog , cats , small dogs care , puppies and young animals , travelling with your dog abroad. Canine First Aid – A half day course : Aim of the course, The vet and your role in first aid, keeping your pet safe in an emergency, car accidents, dog proofing your home, communication and care of your pet, how pets show pain, checking your dogs health, restraint of a pet in need and the use of a muzzle, breathing and respiratory problems including choking, dog CPR , drowning , shock , pet first aid kits, broken bones , spinal injury and moving an injured pet , controlling bleeding , dressings and bandages , paw problems , ears, eyes and mouth , Illnesses , poisoning , bite and stings , burns and temperature related problems , the older dog , small dogs care , puppies and young animals , travelling with your dog abroad. Security Dog First Aid – Full day course. This course is approved by NASDU for the requirement of pet first aid in their standards. First aid is important to know for your security dog not only to comply with associations and local authorities but also for animal welfare and to help a dog in need. The nature of working with dogs will pose a risk that they may be harmed in the course of their work or transport. The course has been designed to meet the NASDU learning outcomes and added a few extra modules to ensure full understanding. The courses will give a 3 year nationally recognised certificate, CPD time credit conformation, weekly video refreshers, evidence-based training certificate.
