Working with older children, many of whom lack the knowledge and skills required
to make well informed and realistic career decisions, it became apparent that
the foundations of career planning needed to be in place much earlier. With the
scaling down of Careers Services, the teaching of careers education is arguably
falling more and more to teachers who have little time and few resources. Recent
reports by Donaldson (Wales) and Gatsby (England) also highlights the link
between experiential learning and economic & social wellbeing. WoW was developed
to target learners in transition from Primary to High school but has
subsequently expanded its remit to cover ages 4 to 19. The project provides a
springboard to enable learners to gain valuable career related life skills in a
fun and interactive setting. WoW complements many other areas of the curriculum
notably, literacy, numeracy and digital competence. The project also provides a
vehicle to enable children to acquire broader social and emotional skills by
linking with key aspects of the curriculum.
