Trade secrets - the business perspective (In-House)

By The In House Training Company

Trade barriers are going up across the globe. And cybercrime is on the increase. The link between the two? The value of trade secrets. As countries become increasingly protectionist as regards international trade, so their IP law has been changing, with the result that companies that previously would have sought protection through patents are opting to go down the trade secret route instead. But is this a high-risk strategy? Technology is changing and this is having an impact on forms of commercial co-operation. Collaborative or open forms of innovation by their very nature involve the sharing of intellectual property (IP), and in many instances this IP is in the form of valuable confidential business information (ie, trade secrets). Little surprise, then, that trade secrets disputes have increased accordingly. At the same time, the changes in technology make trade secrets more vulnerable to attack, misappropriation, theft. So just how effective are the legal protections for trade secrets? How can organisations safeguard the value in their IP (increasingly, the single biggest line in their balance sheets)? This programme is designed to help you address these issues. Note: this is an indicative agenda, to be used as a starting point for a conversation between client and consultant, depending on the organisation's specific situation and requirements. This session is designed to give you a deeper understanding of: Emerging trends in trade secrets protection and exploitation The current situation in key jurisdictions Recent case law How leading companies are responding The importance of trade secret metadata Different external stakeholders and their interests Key steps for effective protection of trade secrets Note: this is an indicative agenda, to be used as a starting point for a conversation between client and consultant, depending on the organisation's specific situation and requirements. 1 What are trade secrets? Negotiation Skills and Techniques for Engineers and Technical Professionals

By EnergyEdge - Training for a Sustainable Energy Future

About this Training Course This is a 2 full-day course that is aimed at providing professionals in the Oil & Gas business with a comprehensive set of core negotiating skills. Negotiations take place in many situations e.g. between peers, manager and subordinate, company and trade unions, company and government. The skills learnt on this course will be useful in all of these situations. However, this course puts a focus on the skills needed in commercial negotiations. A particular emphasis is placed on the relationship and negotiations typically carried out between client and contractor, vendor or the provider of services. A mixture of theory, examples and practical exercises are used so that the participants understand the principles and get an opportunity to try them out. The case studies used are real cases encountered in the Oil & Gas industry. Training Objectives Many technical experts find it difficult to move out of their expertise areas and deal with commercial matters. Negotiating to optimise business value is a step further from their comfort zones. All too often negotiations are then left to finance personnel. They bring many strengths to the table but an understanding of engineering trade-offs is not one of them. By the end of this course, the participants will add to their technical know-how a core competence in negotiation skills. They will thus become formidable negotiating opponents. Target Audience The course is intended for middle-managers and technical and other staff who are responsible for contracts, but with limited previous exposure to negotiations, and who will need these skills in the near future. My Grandpa Stanley Waughman started me off with woodwork at the age of 3 - a good solid age for a girl to start working with hand tools. He was a leather worker by trade and, because of this, his hands were huge, hard and calloused – he could cusp a wasp in them without feeling its sting. As a child I knew he must be very important because his name, Stanley, was written on all his tools. As a child I knew he must be very important because his name, Stanley, was written on all his tools. Up until I was 6 years old I lived in Galston, Ayrshire, and just two doors down from my Grandparents. Ours was a quiet little cul-de-sac, except on days where I played my bright, plastic Fisher Price record player on the street corner. This was in the early 80’s, when we all played outside and scuffed knees and grubby nails were a sign of a good days play. I’d pick up pretty bits and bobs and pop them in my pockets to show my friends – some pretty stones, a handful of gooseberries, and once, the severed head of a pheasant that sent them scarpering and squealing. I just thought the feathers were beautiful. To this day, I still have a soft spot for pheasants.
