This workshop equips participants with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively intervene and support individuals who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts. Participants will learn to recognise the signs of suicidal ideation, confidently engage in supportive conversations, and create practical suicide-safety plans as part of a first aid approach.

But many people avoid difficult conversations or handle them poorly because they’re afraid to address uncomfortable issues and feel unprepared to respond to the emotional reactions that inevitably arise. Navigating Difficult Conversations: Turn Tension Into Progress takes a targeted approach to helping people to manage emotional tension and conduct conversations in a way that enables all parties to stay engaged in collaborative dialogue. Participants will shift their mindset from fearing and avoiding difficult conversations to seeing them as the way to make progress on important issues. And they’ll develop the skills to build trust and respect in every relationship as they navigate sensitive topics. Who Should Attend? This programme is for anyone who finds the thought if having a challenging or difficult conversation, something to be very nervous of, even to the point of avoiding the issue. We recommend that participants have first attended our Aspire programmes, Management Essentials and Performance Coaching, as they provide a strong foundation to the topic, which this session then builds upon. In Navigating Difficult Conversations participants will discover how to balance Courage and Consideration throughout the conversation by: Sharing their Purpose—the issue they need to make progress on—and Positive Intent—how they want the other person to benefit from the conversation Responding to emotional reactions using the skills: Pause, Don’t Panic Observe, Don’t Judge Ask, Don’t Assume Outcomes This module will help participants: Create a strong foundation for difficult conversations by setting a clear and collaborative tone that balances their own and others’ needs. Understand that emotional reactions are a natural, human response—and notice them as a signal that the conversation needs an adjustment to stay on track. Practice a range of tactics to respond in the moment to help everyone stay engaged and make progress.

This highly interactive training offers strategies for navigating behaviour challenges with learners of all ages, in any environment. Using case studies and examples from your setting we begin the workshop highlighting the key concepts of applied behaviour analysis, helping you to understand why challenging behaviours occur. We discuss the importance of designing supportive learning environments based upon the Pyramid Approach to Education framework. The next step in the workshop is to define behaviours which require intervention and establish the function of these behaviours. These skills are put into practice using our own case studies and furthermore applying this to your own learners. The second half of the workshop addresses strategies which can be used proactively and reactively to decrease the challenging behaviours which you see in your setting. As we investigate each strategy to replace or reduce a behaviour you will have the opportunity to assess if that strategy will be suitable for your learner and identify the next steps to take when you return to your setting. The workshop concludes by demonstrating how you and your team can evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of your behaviour plans as you put your new strategies into practise. Historical Association webinar series: Making history accessible Presenters: Gemma Hargraves and Sally Lonsdale From a special school perspective, Sally Lonsdale will explore how history is encountered at her school. With secondary students working at Key Stage 1 age related expectations, history is seen as an ‘enriching subject’ with a strong focus on literacy and vocabulary. The session will explore how students with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities and those with EHCP outcomes are supported and show how history teaching can be effective and joyful when directed by student experience and interests and focusing on skills rather than specific knowledge.
