James Ewart Racing Ltd was founded in 2004 as a Flat and National Hunt racing yard: initially buying and selling French horses to U.K. owners whilst establishing training facilities. Amongst his early purchases were Dark Ben and My Way de Solzen. James has particularly strong links with France resulting in a high proportion of French horses in the yard but has also had great success with Irish and English horses. He has trained multiple Bumper, Hurdle and Chase winners with some horses winning 12 times and he is always striving to improve the quality of his string. THE TEAM James Ewart James was brought up around horses all his life and as a child enjoyed jumping large hedges on small ponies in the Wynnstay country! Teenage stints followed with work experience at Nicky Henderson, John Leadbetter and Jonjo O’Neill followed by a course at the Royal Agricultural College studying Land Management. Then on to Ferdy Murphy for three years as Amateur Assistant and over to France for four years with Guillaume Macaire as Assistant Trainer - some highlights being Champion Amateur Jockey 2000 and taking Jair du Cochet on his UK raids. Briony Ewart Briony spent her childhood under the tutelage of the legendary East Anglian trainer ‘EAP’ – Miss Pickard. Highlights included winning the Champion East Anglian Native Working Hunter Pony and twice qualifying as an individual for the Pony Club Eventing Championships. At the Royal Agricultural College (now University) she met James and spent a summer in France with Guillaume Macaire before working for two years at the Shadwell Stud and in 2004 helped James set up James Ewart Racing. She has been responsible for breaking in and producing many winners including Wilde Pastures, Open De L’Isle and Capital Venture. Briony still continues with breaking in, is a regular work rider and helps with the horses at the races. As a hobby she enjoys competing on Neil Ewart’s homebred Fells whose bloodlines go back 60 years. David Macleod – Head Lad David has spent a lifetime in racing and has worked at Newmarket and at Middleham with Mark Johnston. He has a wealth of experience in all aspects of horse management and their wellbeing and is a vital member of the team. Charles Marini - Assistant Trainer Charles has returned to the yard as Assistant Trainer and is plays an important part in the running of the yard. JohnAmbrose - Yard Manager Colin Barnfather - Groundsman Leah Barnfather - Part time and weekends. Alistair Bell - Yard repairs. When small, Abigail Jackson made shoes from wallpaper sample books and lashed her brothers’ wooden building blocks onto her feet with string believing herself to be a geisha. In her bedroom she stitched gnomes on hankies and cut off the frills from her maxi dress to make clothes for Pippa the pocket-sized doll. In the kitchen her mum sat her on the draining board, put sellotape across her fringe and cut under it. Abigail Jackson became one of a tiny handful of Daventry punks, who shuffling round town in bondage trousers from Seditionaries and handmade clothes coloured in with biro pens, held together with hundreds of safety pins. In her bedroom she made homemade Sid Vicious badges with pages from the NME and sticky back plastic. Dreamt of being in The Slits and planned never to have a proper job. Abi went to Northampton Art College in the ’80’s to study fashion design and Illustration. Its this foundation of designing and pattern cutting that has coloured her judgment ever since. From opening a clothes shop in Coventry at the age of 19 to opening the studio in her 50’s Its only ever been about creating and making. Abi works as a freelancer so no two jobs are the same. She designs, sews and makes for a living, breathing, all singing, all dancing proper job. In the between times she has work as a freelance wardrobe supervisor traveling extensively and working with some wonderful people. Upon returning home she stitches in her studio, works on community or school projects, plans workshops and collaborates with other creatives in Burns Street Studios. 2021 sees Corinne's Creative Kitchen going from strenght to strength. We work with flavour in our kitchen. Our products are completely natural using the best quality local ingredients with no additives or preservatives and produced in small batches. Our spices mainly come from India. We are quite fussy about this as we try to recreate the exotic flavours, the essence of Indian home food. Indian dishes, snacks, sauces and pickles are our main products but we also supply a small selection of Thai dishes. When the pandemic hit in 2020, we decided to add an extra string to our bow by creating a completely new 2-person portion menu with an international flavour. These have been taken up very well and have brought in a new customer base. This menu changes regularly, but already there are some ‘cannot remove’ favourites. Living in The Garden of England, we are almost obliged to produce some chutneys and jams from the local fruit in the gardens around us. But, as we favour the exotic, in 2020 we started producing cordials such as Spiced Crab apple, Grape & Hibiscus and Apple & Bramble, to name a few. Our Lemon & Ginger is a MUST for your Gin! We simply do have to mention our home-made Indian Mustard and Horseradish Mustard, hand-made in small quantities that go ‘oh so well’ with roast beef and other meats. We have run cookery classes since 2008, as I love teaching people how to cook good Indian home food. Since 2020 our classes are on ZOOM and I AM LOVING IT! I can now reach so many more people. I run single classes with a theme but my mainstay is a 6-course weekly class which gives a very good grounding and covers chicken curry to fried fish, with options for using vegetables instead of meats. We continue with our delivery service to a few farm shops and directly to the public. Now in mid-2021 we are starting to cater quite regularly for small parties as everyone comes out to celebrate those special birthdays or just catching up with friends. I’m Michael Starkey. I’m an experienced music tutor offering lessons for 5 string banjo and acoustic guitar in Edinburgh, Scotland. These are for individuals and groups of all ages and abilities who maybe don’t know how to get started with their playing; feel stuck with where their playing is at; or are looking to hone their skills further by developing specific playing techniques. I help musicians (and aspiring musicians): Get their playing off the ground by learning the basic skills needed to begin making music Appreciate their existing skills and build on these by offering advice and ways to move forward with their playing Gain confidence making music with other people Develop techniques specific to old time clawhammer banjo playing, fingerpicking folk and country-blues acoustic guitar and acoustic guitar accompaniment for traditional folk music My reasons for teaching: I believe that music has had a very positive impact on my life. I started playing as a young teenager and have always been in bands and going out to gigs and sessions since. For me, it’s a good way to spend time with other people but also with myself. I find that when I’m playing, I’m less likely to be worrying about other things. A bit later on, I came across clawhammer banjo and old time stringband music and got obsessed. I found that there weren’t that many people to play with or learn from where I live so I decided to take up banjo teaching. I like to travel in the US, learn from musicians there, pickup new tricks and tunes and then bring them back over here to share. My experience: I am a full time musician, teacher (and gardener). I had my first guitar student when I was a teenager. I work with individual students from my home in Leith and also teach group classes for the Scots Music Group in Edinburgh. In recent years as a community gardener I have worked in therapeutic horticulture with people struggling with their mental health and with individuals with Autism. I’ve also worked as a tree planter. I play in a number of different bands, have toured and gigged across the UK and have made a number of recordings. I also co-host a weekly old time music session in Edinburgh.
