Description
Come and spend a day at Stitching Kitchen when guest tutor Karen Lane will be teaching us to make a wet felted bird in just one day. Your creation can be as realistic or fantastic as you wish. You can choose from a seated or standing style. 
Over the day we will be wet felting around resists using Carded Corriedale. Templates will be provided so you will need to decide the style ahead of time (scroll through the images above for the options). We will discuss ways in which these can be adapted to make a variety of different types of birds. There’s also scope for further embellishing your work with hand embroidery if that’s something you would like to do.

About your tutor
Karen is Mixed Media Textile Artist with a passion for Feltmaking. She discovered the art of Feltmaking in 2014 and immediately fell in love with the very physical and tactile process of transforming loose soft fibres into a unique piece of seamless felt. 
Karen is a member of the International Feltmakers Association and runs workshops in Feltmaking and Textile Art both here in the UK and in France.

There are stacks of different colours of yarn and heaps of interesting textures for you to pick from. We will use Rya knots to create a tasselled edge to your work and finish on it by fixing a wooden stick all ready for hanging.</p>
<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;"><br fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Tea and coffee is on tap and I am on hand to help you if choosing stitches and yarns is getting overwhelming. That said weaving is a strangely relaxing craft, any process which uses both hands and allows you to enter that state of flow is extremely healing, a great antidote to the stresses of our modern, busy lives.&nbsp;</p>

Janine will measure your quilt top, provide a price estimate, and guide you in choosing from pattern samples and thread colours to bring your quilt to life.

Silk Shading has been taken to the next level with this contemporary design. Silk shading is the art of creating shading with threads. This technique is also called needle painting (peinture a l’aiguille)
We will begin by introducing the split stitch on the outlines of the design. In the second stage, you will be learning how to blend colour using short and long stitch.
In the second session, we will practise the stem stitch and satin stitch. A cluster of crystals will be added to create some depth and sparkle.
The completed design reveals a flower with pink petals and carefully applied crystals add to the effect of droplets allowing the design to “shimmer” or “glisten” in the light.
Homework in between both sessions is recommended to allow a smooth transition in the class. Finishing all the steps taught in the first session will be recommended. Stitching all the outlines of the design and finish the silk shading in the flower.

Basic skills required
You will be expected to have some stitching experience and understand basic embroidery stitches such as split stitch, satin stitch and long and short stitch. There is no age limit as long as young embroiderers are supervised.
Just be aware that there will be sharp edges on wires etc. and the techniques will require quite intricate dexterity.
Certification
A certificate of achievement is issued upon submission of images of the completed project which will be assessed by your tutor.
Learning Outcomes
Be able to identify the many types of Goldwork thread available and their application.
Have confidence with padding and application of metallic leather/fabric. (Vegans will be pleased to know that we use a lovely soft faux leather).
Be confident with techniques for application of unique goldwork embroidery threads.
Upon completion of this course you will have the necessary skills to attempt projects on your own.

<p data-key="115"><span data-key="116">Learning to crochet in the round is essential for all sorts of crochet projects - amigurumi, softies, hats, bags, granny squares . . . I won't pretend it's easy, but it's not as tricky as you might think! </span></p>
<p data-key="117"><span data-key="118">The 3 bears will be a fun introduction to the principles of crocheting continuously in the round. We'll look at magic rings, even increasing and the single crochet stitch (US terms). We'll also have a little go at other ways to crochet in the round, try some join-as-you-go and creating fancy edging using the single crochet stitch in reverse (crab stitch). </span></p>

Learning to crochet in the round is essential for all sorts of crochet projects - amigurumi, softies, hats, bags, granny squares . . . I won't pretend it's easy, but it's not as tricky as you might think! 
The 3 bears will be a fun introduction to the principles of crocheting continuously in the round. We'll look at magic rings, even increasing and the single crochet stitch (US terms). We'll also have a little go at other ways to crochet in the round, try some join-as-you-go and creating fancy edging using the single crochet stitch in reverse (crab stitch). 
Depending on your ability you can join me for Week 1 then finish off in your own time, or you can come back for seconds and we can finish off together the following week.

PLEASE NOTE that for this design you have the option between a white or a black background (see pictures)The class will allow you to develop at your own pace, with the opportunity for one to one guidance from the tutor due to the limited class numbers.
You will need the additional equipment:– a seated hoop 8 or 10 inch (with webbing around the top ring)
– embroidery scissors

– pencil and rubber
