The mayor’s visit marked the first phase in establishing this new Permablitz London garden which will be used for educational purposes to demonstrate sustainable and regenerative wildlife-friendly food growing, keeping chickens and integrating sensory and nature-connection wellbeing areas. Each week the award-wining London’s Community Kitchen saves approximately 50 tonnes of surplus food that would otherwise go to landfill and uses it to feed up to 14,000 people. They run free cookery classes to teach people cooking skills on a budget, using surplus ingredients. They recently won the Outstanding Achievement award at the Observer Food Monthly Awards 2022.

John Chilton School is a mixed Community Special School funded by Ealing Local Authority for pupils aged 4-19 years who may have moderate to severe learning difficulties as a primary need or as a dual diagnosis to their medical or physical needs. John Chilton School is unique in that the main part of the school is located within the all age Alec Reed Academy (ARA). This enables pupils form both schools to integrate and be included as needed. The Phase 2 department is temporarily placed at Wood End Academy in Greenford. John Chilton School has a bespoke building for three classes with additional facilities of a hall, therapy room, sensory room, cookery room and medical support. Specialist staff and therapists working across both sites linking them and ensuring the excellence of the whole school provision. The school building is fully accessible for pupils with disabilities. Facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, therapy suite, food technology rooms, sensory room and a medical room. There are dedicated playgrounds for pupils with a variety of outdoor toys and zones; a large part of these playgrounds has a safety surface. The school also has a large outdoor area of classroom and allotments used to promote life skills, gardening and horticulture. The majority of our team has lived experience of neurodivergence. Our experience in additional needs includes autism, speech and language needs, demand avoidance, cerebral palsy, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, ADHD, mild, moderate and profound learning difficulties, physical disabilities, sensory processing needs, and other difficulties such as school refusal in addition to mental health-related needs such as anxiety and panic attacks.

The tone of the text clearly considers the range of potential audiences, parents and teachers, and is one of understanding and empathy in relation to those supporting the young people but also the learners. From the outset, the key challenges to learning for children with Down Syndrome, and also with other specific learning needs, are discussed and these provide a clear rationale for the way the curriculum has been designed. The focus is ensuring learning opportunities are practical, relevant and multi-sensory for children and for young people to engage with the mathematics in a context, and make connections with the purpose of the mathematical concepts to enable them to apply these to life.

Touch Typing is an essential life skill and we find that children who learn accurately to literally type without looking at their fingers, will save time in producing homework and in exams etc. As experienced Specialist Teachers, we are able to effectively differentiate and individualise touch typing challenges so that all students achieve their potential. Multi-sensory learning, through games and incentives, create a brilliantly fun atmosphere in which children aged 7 upwards, thrive! We have children who want to learn good basic typing skills and those who need this skill in order to type for GCSEs, and A Level exams. Note taking, punctuation skills and real time typing under pressure are also explored with the advanced students. An encouraging, motivating and uplifting environment is created in which children of all learning abilities thrive. We specialise in helping children with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia and hypermobility as well as for those just want to learn it as a life skill, or for application towards the skill section of the DofE levels. Our testimonies tell of children literally loving the courses to such an extent, that they often come back time and time again, bringing their siblings and friends for follow up courses!
