The English and Media Centre is an independent educational charity with a national and international reputation as a Centre of Excellence. It is a development centre, serving the needs of secondary and FE teachers and students of English and Media Studies in the UK and beyond. I like to think I can offer an independent perspective. I am not bound to promote any single organisation or conform to any single ‘message’ or range of products. I have always been drawn to divergent and innovative approaches and people who think outside the box. People who are happy to challenge the status quo. It means, I hope, that I am often able to have a different focus and perspective on things, while at the same time being aware of other perspectives and views. I qualified as a school teacher and some time after gained my first Swimming Teaching Qualification. It was the early 1970s… and yes… I’m guessing you’re doing the sums! I have ‘clocked’ a lot of mileage over some 50 years!! I have worked in a number of professional as well as voluntary roles. The upside is that I have had time to consider and review opinions and judgements on a wide number of ideas, events and initiatives. I enjoyed a 21 year career as a Secondary School teacher, uniquely teaching in both Humanities and Science Departments. I have taught in London and overseas.

Firstly, our programmes are completely personalised to each candidate; no two people have the same experience because we only train between 20 and 30 trainees each year. Unlike the big university models where you would be one of 200 trainee teachers, we tailor the year to maximise your skills and you will therefore be better prepared to teach. We have our own supportive SCITT community, our own wellbeing programme and our own life coach. Secondly, because our trainees don’t have to attend University lectures, we have time to give them a bespoke enhancement programme running alongside the mainstream school placements. Our secondary trainees have the opportunity to teach in primary schools, pupil referral units, Special Educational Needs settings, work with CAHMS and teach in Sixth Forms. They also spend time at our local private schools to teach children with English as an additional language. Again, trainee curriculum design is tailored to maximise preparation. Thirdly, our programmes are competitively priced because we know graduates are already carrying huge university debts. We charge £7705 for QTS, as opposed to £9000, but we also give a free qualification for secondary trainees in addition to QTS so they leave as qualified Teachers of the PSHE Association [Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education]. This gives them an edge over other candidates when applying for jobs, and fully prepares them for teaching beyond the curriculum and preparing their pupils for life in modern Britain.

n 2011, frustrated by the current state of education I began to blog. Since then I have expressed the constraints and irritations of ordinary teachers, detailed the successes and failures of my classroom and synthesised my 15 years of teaching experienced through the lens of education research and cognitive psychology. The Learning Spy is widely recognised as one of the most influential education blogs in the UK and has won a number of awards. In February 2017, I recorded 2.5 million visitors to the site. So, what have I done with all this influence? Well, Ofsted started listening. In 2014 I consulted on the Inspection Handbook and made a commitment to common sense and practical humanity which has resulted in lesson observation grades being scrapped and inspectors asked to ‘look at’ classroom practice and ask questions, rather than ‘look for’ preferred methodologies.

Incorporated in December 2008, the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom formally assumed responsibility and leadership for learning outside the classroom from the [then] Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) on the 1st April 2009. The premise of LOtC has been supported by many individuals and organisations over the years. The launch of the LOtC Manifesto by the then Secretary of State in November 2006 marked a significant step forward in recognising and promoting the benefits of LOtC in young people’s educational attainment and social, emotional and personal development. Supported by the majority of Local Authority Outdoor Education Advisers, the LOtC Quality Badge makes it easier for anyone organising educational visits to gain approval and provides assurance that their chosen destination has met 6 nationally recognised quality
