Brushstrokes Courses provides art instruction and courses, building creative confidence in a variety of artistic skills, from drawing to painting. Students are given individual support and taught best practices while remaining encouraged to explore their own artistic identity. Founded in 2020 by qualified art teacher Laura Truesdale, Brushstrokes has already helped over 100 artists learn the skills to create their masterpiece. Each Brushstrokes course is designed to accommodate, grow, and challenge artists at every level. Beginners will enjoy Laura’s encouragement and fun teaching style. Intermediate students will be challenged to push themselves. Established artists will find new inspiration or engage with novel mediums to round their craft. Each week’s lessons build on the week prior, creating habits and artistic tools that will stick for life. Free from institutional restraints, Brushstrokes puts student wellbeing back at the heart of the classes. Laura draws on her background in social work, PGCE training, and over a decade of teaching experience to ensure students are supported. If you want to learn the history of art, the context of a piece of work, build your creative confidence, develop technical skill, brush up on your existing skills, or be inspired, then Brushstrokes Courses is for you. Laura gained her BA in Art from the University of Reading in 2013 and went onto to achieve her PGCE in Secondary School Art Teaching in 2016. Since receiving Qualified Teacher Status in 2017, she has taught in the local community, before establishing Brushstrokes Courses in January 2020.

Encouraged as a small child by an artistic mother, I always sketched family members and pets, being able to capture a good likeness. From school through to college, my ability to draw became apparent and was recognised throughout my home town of Colchester in Essex. I had taken to pastels after years of painting in watercolour. The transition happened when working on a portrait….. "With watercolours I couldn't keep the smooth texture of the skin and the more I worked at it, the rougher the 'skin' got. Frustrated, I picked up a box of pastels that I'd had from college and almost closed my eyes as I chalked over the face I'd been working on for hours, cringing with the fear of having to throw the whole picture in the bin…. I smudged it over with my finger. The result was amazingly smooth and definitely 'skin' like. I put away the watercolours and invested in many shades of quality pastels". In 1997 and keen to enter into the art world, I offered my services to organisations to produce promotional portraits which came with good media coverage and helped my business catapult within its first year. I was introduced to various artists and teachers and was offered a place to work alongside Royal portrait artist Richard Stone who had admired my work through the local press. In 2003 I took up teaching art within local clubs and private classes, holding exhibitions and encouraging 11 to 16 year olds to develop their artistic talents with workshops using different mediums. From 2008, I had the immense pleasure of working with Colchester Zoo in Essex when I became their Artist in Residence. From holding art classes in the Zoo and working with children during the school holidays to portray their favourite animals, one of my greatest adventures was to work closely with the Zoo's great managerial team on their 'Stand Tall' project for their 50th anniversary. This saw many local artists give up their time to design and create personal works of art on 2.5m giraffe sculptures. These were then displayed around Colchester and even took a tour to London's South Bank before they came back to the Zoo for auction. It was with much excitement to see one of my giraffes (Big Catrina) sell to the highest bidder at £6800. Developing very unique drawing skills, I have helped students from all over the world with many varying art abilities to accomplish their artistic dreams. With a limited palette of chalks, and a vast experience in pastel application, my teaching took me to places I hadn't even dreamed of. Constantly moving forward and learning new ways to pass on my skills, I would say that teaching students of all ages is in my blood now. It has become a passion to show others the beauty of this versatile medium.

Nilay Islek was born in Izmir, Turkey. She completed her elementary and high school education in this city. Photography became her interest in her high school years. In 1999, she entered Dokuz Eylül University Fine Art Faculty and graduated with the thesis “Sensual Projections” in 2003. She completed her Master Degree in the same faculty with her thesis “Visual Culture and Social Memory in the Context of Digital Photography Aesthetics” in 2009. Islek started to perform Advertising Photography in 1995 during her education. While she moved up the career ladder, she became a sought instructor and gave lectures in several schools and associations such as Izmir Fen High School and Izmir Association of Photography Art (IFOD). Universiade 2005 Izmir Summer Plays was her first important international event as a member of the editorial board. After that, she has participated in several international events and projects. Her newest project is Izmir- Bremen Photography Artist Residency Program “Elsewhere” between 2017-2018. In the meantime, Nilay Islek started her own atelier, Artlens Visual Culture and Photography, which is a continuing education centre in the field of photography for eight years now. In 2016, Nilay Islek is chosen for the international title of Fujifilm “X-Photographer” as the first woman photographer from Turkey. She’s been given Basic Photography Courses Fujifilm Education Centre in Izmir as the official instructor of Fujifilm. She worked as a lecturer at Izmir Economy University between 2015-2018. On the other hand, her academic career is going on at the Ege University Faculty of Communication, Radio, Television and Cinema PhD program. She lives and continues her life of art in London. Now, along with a BA in Commercial Photography from Bournemouth Arts University, I keep busy with all manner of projects. These days I'm focussed primarily on Weddings, Workshops and People. "I pride myself on reliability and communication - it’s the first step to building a relationship with a client/subject. That relationship is vital to getting the results I want and the results they require. I don’t take a single shot until I fully understand what it is that the client is looking for. Once that's done, only then do I start sprinkling on some inkpanda magic.” Inkpanda is about visual storytelling, finding the beauty in the mundane, bringing truth to the forefront, and using modern technology and equipment to help bring artistic concepts to life.

My work is about landscape. I try to go beyond the immediate sensation to something felt and experienced, seeking to find the spirit and inner reality of place. To achieve this I walk and draw using sketchbooks and loose pieces of paper to record sensations, colours, structure and form. Many of my locations are very well known to me and have been walked over and drawn many times over a period of years and in differing seasons. In the studio I use this raw material to create work that is true to the sum of my experience. I work in a variety of mixed media; oil, acrylic, collage, ink, watercolour and gouache, either on their own or in various combinations on paper and canvas. There is no set formula for any piece of work, the choice of materials used and the size is driven solely by what is right for a particular piece.
