Since 2004, East Renfrewshire Council and Glasgow City Council have been working together to develop and manage Dams to Darnley Country Park. The country park sits between Barrhead, Darnley and Newton Mearns, and is made up of a patchwork of woodland, grassland, open water, wetland and farmland. Throughout the year, the Dams to Darnley Countryside Ranger Service run events, health walks and volunteering activities. They also offer outdoor learning opportunities for local schools. The Barrhead dams, the country park's most striking feature, is a series of 5 interconnected reservoirs owned and managed by Scottish Water. The Brock Burn is the source for the Barrhead dams. This small, but important watercourse also provides a corridor for wildlife and has influenced the country park's historical landscape for centuries. As the Brock Burn continues its journey north beyond the Barrhead dams it becomes the focus of Dams to Darnley Local Nature Reserve. The reserve contains a mosaic of woodland, grassland and wetland habitats. The largest woodland is Waulkmill Glen, an important ancient semi-natural site. The glen is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its geology and includes the remains of a 324 million year old tropical, marine environment.

Hello and welcome to Calicoclair. I’m Clair, I have been a keen crafter for most of my life. I discovered a passion for patchwork and quilting 12 years ago and haven’t stopped sewing since. I am a Mum to four, 3 boys and a girl. I took a break from my nursing career between number 3 & 4 following another house move with my hubby. I started Calicoclair to give me some me time. I have had a job since I was 15 and I found it strange not working. (I know, mad huh?) I enjoyed Calicoclair so much that I finally made the big decision to lapse my nursing registration in 2016. Scary at the time but I know it was the right decision. Since then I have added classes to the mix, which I love. You may have noticed that my Clair is missing letters/spelt wrong. Apparently Mum made a mistake on the announcement cards when I was born (still woozy?!) It stuck and consequently I could never find anything with my name on when I was little. I shared the trait with my son. As all designs for Calicoclair are my own and can be personalised to your requirements, no child has to suffer like I did. I hope you enjoy looking around. In 2004 a group of friends established the charity and raised funds to purchase the old farm to develop it as a community skills hub and cultural centre. People came from far and wide to help transform the land, cultivate gardens and help build the new facilities. Where formerly there was only one, exposed, windswept 23 acre field: we have a biodiverse patchwork of gardens and pastures with thousands of young trees, public access footpaths and a range of workshops and visitor resources. Over 600 people have volunteered here, we've hosted craft apprentiships, accredited courses and business enterprise workshops. We provide a year round, rich cultural programme of events and activities. Locally we've initiated a state of the art community kitchen to help seed new local produce enterprises and supported former apprentices to set up their own craft businesses within their communities. From small beginings we have grown to become one of the most celebrated grass-roots environmental and cultural initiatives in Wales with an international support base of former interns and volunteers extending to over 30 different countries.

I am a freelance designer-maker, applied artist, crafts-woman, whatever you want to call me – I stitch stuff by hand; fabric, metal, porcelain, leather, vitreous enamel.. . My work is various, it depends whether I am working for myself, to commission or collaborating with other artists. But whatever I do is slow to make; detailed hand stitching in any material whether in silk, linen, wool or wire takes time, consequently my work is also slow to evolve. I decided to show on this site what I do, who I am work with, how I work and also how I think. I want to show the work behind HER WORK not just the finished things. The journey from the first idea, searching, researching, drawing, sampling and eventually making the finished piece. You will be able to watch my work progress, or not; maybe by seeing this record people will come to value making that is manufactured by hand, heart and eye. In May 2010 I developed – Heart Space Studios ( from my yoga practice “Put your Hands in your Heart Space”) and for 5 years it was a space in Bristol England for all things textile. The activities at the studios can still be viewed – I closed the studio workshops in 2015 – the classes remain on this site as part of the blog, they contain many of my most popular posts….. Heart Space Studios continues as a group of makers who develop projects primarily for publishing companies. Most notably we work with designer Kaffe Fassett in the production of his patchwork quilt books and other fabrics.

In 2016, I began offering workshops in my studio, located just outside of Coggeshall and a few miles from Colchester. The converted barn provides a creative and supportive hub where I teach groups of up to twelve. Many of my structured textile workshops are taught across one or two days, but I do provide longer, design oriented textile courses and I mentor several groups on an ongoing basis. As my background is in creative textiles all the workshops I offer both in the studio and as a visiting tutor involve free motion embroidery with a design approach. More recently I have begun to take on other textile tutors and I now can offer a much larger range of textile courses including dressmaking, pattern cutting, felting, modern patchwork & Quilting as well as hand embroidery and decorative textiles. As well as textiles I have expanded the workshop itinerary and now offer illustration, lino printing, fused glass and silver clay jewellery on a regular basis with local, fabulous tutors. I hope that regardless of what experience level you have, you will still find something to suit you. So whether you are a beginner or more advanced in your chosen craft, take a look at the full range of workshops available. If you are unsure as to whether you will be able fully participate in a class, then simply get in touch and I would be happy to advise on what is best for you to do. While the majority of the workshops available through this site are based at my studio, I do travel and teach regularly in other local venues and I am happy to go further a field. This allows me to reach more students and collaborate with others, which is something I love to do. I offer a range of structured one and two day workshops to beginners through to more experienced in machine embroidery. Do get in touch if you are a Guild or textile group to discuss your groups requirements and I am a happy to send you a list of workshops I offer. Back to the studio – the current range of workshops will grow over time and I hope to continue offering a wider variety of subjects so if there is something you are interested in but can’t see listed, get in touch! If I have something in high demand, I will do what I can to arrange a workshop around this.
