We invite you to join the IOU Education Distance Learning Initiative for the Incarcerated. This is an effort to bring Islamic Education to a population that needs it most. IOU has embarked on a journey to provide it’s Diploma and Undergraduate course of Islamic and Arabic studies, and other course offerings to the incarcerated Muslim population across the country, and around the world where requested. Efforts are underway in several state and federal correctional facilities to provide authentic Islamic Education through this initiative, to Muslim inmates in an effort to aid their rehabilitation process and to assist in preparing them for a successful and productive life after prison. Because the Islamic Online University was founded as an internet-based institution of learning, to accomplish the above-stated objective has required a “paradigm shift” away from the internet resource, to that of hard-copy materials, i.e. soft-back, non-spiral bound text-books, (cds and dvds where staff supervision is available.) There is no need for the inmate to access the internet, as the materials are made available to him or her, free of charge. The cost of the Diploma program to the inmate is free, through the generous donations of global and local donors. Currently male and female Muslim inmates are enrolled in 26 states and Puerto Rico. To date more than two thousand (2000) inmates are registered in the program across the country, with an active enrollment of more than one thousand (1000) inmates.

n providing modern, positive reinforcement based training to dogs on the programme, the offenders promote responsible animal welfare and effective dog training without violence and confrontation, leading to learners increased empathy, self-regulation, social skills, compassion, responsibility and respect. The people on the Restart Dog Project have, through attachment and interaction with the dogs, gained insights into identifying their own behaviour and the skills to change. Understanding the emotional capacity of the dogs and how this affects their behaviour offers a greater insight into how prisoners/offenders manage their own feelings of frustration and self-control. The skills learnt during the programmes have been a key part of the graduates’ social reintegration. At the same time, the prisoners/offenders have the opportunity to become well trained professionals within the dog training industry gaining qualifications up to a Level 6, which is a foundation degree. The programme is not funded by the taxpayer, and instead is paid for by the Prisoners Fund, which is raised by work that Prisoners undertake during their time in the custodial system for other organisations. Prisoners/offenders who apply to participate in the Restart Dogs program need be engaged in rehabilitation programs and be engaging in the prison system. Our objectives are to develop selected prisoners as dog trainers, to produce dogs suitable as assistance dogs for people in need. As one of our participants eloquently said- “I have lost my freedom, but I can actually help someone else to get theirs back” We work closely with charities and community groups such as Moorlands Dog Rescue, by raising and training potential assistance dogs or retraining rescue dogs.

Heeley Residents Association wanted to see the land used to make Heeley a better place to live. During 1980 the Association developed the idea of a city farm, and gradually won support for it. Work began on site in July 1981 and the Farm was founded. Over the following years Heeley City Farm had to fight one major battle after another for money and security but the enthusiasm of workers and residents won through. The Farm grew organically over the years from it’s early days with a shed and £25 in the bank, and soon became a well-loved part of the Heeley landscape providing beautiful green spaces and education, employment, and training opportunities. Heeley City Farm is now a well established community, not for profit charity and visitor attraction based on a working farm a mile from Sheffield City centre. Staff and volunteers from Heeley City Farm work with young people, adults with learning disabilities and with local communities across Sheffield to promote regeneration, environmental education, energy efficiency and health and well-being. Horticulture trainees, staff and volunteers also manage organic vegetable gardens at Meersbrook Park, Wortley Walled Gardens and Firth Park allotments. The last remaining terraced house on the Farm site on Alexandra Road has been eco –refurbished and now houses Heeley Energy House, formerly South Yorkshire Energy Centre, an interactive visitor and advice centre open to the public on Wednesday - Sunday, 11am - 3pm. Westfield School is smaller than most: there are currently just over 60 learners on roll, between the ages of 2 and 19. This number varies year on year. The school dates from the early 1970's, but the buildings and grounds have undergone considerable improvement over the years, and now feature six class bases, two sensory areas, a specialist food technology room, therapy room, multi-purpose hall and sensory garden. Other facilities such as hydrotherapy and RDA are accessed via alternative providers. Our playground is divided into four distinct areas to enable different activities to take place with no effect on young people requiring ‘quiet time’. We regard playtimes as an extension of the curriculum and different activities are offered on different days, which enables learning to continue throughout leisure activities. It is a great feeling to witness four of the ECM outcomes happening every time you look out of the window: no-one has yet managed to achieve economic well-being out there!
