Always wanted to have a go at mosaic making? This might be the class for you! What to expect A brief introduction and demonstration on mosaic making using the Direct Method. Included will be how to use tile nippers, how to create shapes and an explanation of various andamento styles and how to grout. Please note that grouting will not be done in this class however you will receive a grout bag to take home with full instructions (including a video for reference). Who is this for? Suitable for beginners, however, those with some mosaic experience are also welcome to join. Debra works with the mediums of Mosaic, alongside painting and drawing. She graduated in Fine Art from Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford University some years ago. She recently completed a Diploma in Mosaic Studies at the London School of Mosaic where she spent time refreshing her knowledge of the mosaic process with its roots in antiquity, and grounded herself in the Roman and Byzantine styles of mosaic making. She is currently exploring contemporary methods, techniques and modern approaches to themes from the past. Further to her personal practice in mosaic making and painting and drawing, she is also keen to teach and pass on these traditional skills through workshops and art lecturing, currently with WEA and occasionaly at the British Museum. Giulia Manzoni is a Master Mosaicist who designs and makes bespoke mosaics for residential, artistic and architectural commissions in her central London studio. Classically trained at the renowned Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo, Italy, Giulia has spent the last 10 years refining her craft working on projects between London and San Francisco. Using centuries-old techniques, Giulia’s work reflects the rich tradition of this ancient art form. Her studio practice spans a breadth of applications, from traditional mosaics for domestic and commercial settings to contemporary works of art for private commissions. Giulia specialises in recreating historically accurate mosaics for walls and flooring. Selecting the finest Italian marbles, her designs are sensitive to a building’s architectural heritage. Notable projects include Victorian marble flooring for a private Kensington townhouse, an entrance sign for Restaurant Vermuteria designed with a nod to the grand cafés of 18th century Europe, and a collaborative restoration project for the gallery floor of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Underpinned by the same rigorous training, Giulia takes a more free form approach for her art commissions. Applying the individual tesserae directly to a surface, she gradually builds texture and colour to create works of art with a three-dimensional quality, using a range of traditional materials and found objects. She has applied her artistic flair to a range of private commissions, from tables and picture screens to a large-scale abstract artwork based on the paintings of Sam Francis. Giulia established her eponymous mosaics studio at Cockpit Arts in Holborn. Where she offers her mosaic services and runs courses in mosaic techniques.

We are an independent art school that teaches mosaic art to children and adults. We deliver specialist short courses, workshops, accredited training and a Diploma in Mosaic Studies, the first of its kind in the UK. Based under a council estate in Camden, we are a civic space, providing opportunities for local artists to practice, local charities to operate and local people to come together. Our community is at the heart of what we do and as a charity, our mission is to provide opportunities for well-being and social cohesion through the creation of mosaic art and other art activities. We work extensively with vulnerable people within the community, including those with special educational needs, youths from a local offending service and older people.
