Why is Mouth Care and Oral Hygiene Important?
Effective oral hygiene practices (mouth care) are necessary to ensure the maintenance of effective oral health through the removal of bacterial plaque, dry mouth care and denture care. Good oral health is important for eating and drinking, communication, the absence of pain and infection, and paramount for dignity and comfort. There is increasing evidence linking poor oral health to systemic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hospital acquired pneumonia.

Why Is Multiple Sclerosis Care Important?
Multiple sclerosis is the most common cause of neurological disability in young adults. It is a disease of the brain and spinal cord, and a lifelong condition that usually follows a relapsing or progressive course and results in a gradual accumulation of permanent disability. MS causes a multitude of symptoms that affect physical and cognitive function as well as mood; symptoms vary between individuals and for the same individual. Although disease-modifying drugs (DMDs), which can change the disease course, are available for people with active relapsing disease, there is no cure. MS affects every aspect of people’s lives – work, family, social life –and is characterised by unpredictability and variability. This means a holistic approach to care is required to meet the needs of people living with the condition.

Overview
This Delirium Care Training ½ day course looks at the basic understanding of Delirium, the treatments and the associated risks, difference between Delirium and Dementia and general observations including person centred care, good documentation and legal aspects/guidelines.

Why Delirium Care Important?
Delirium is a state of heightened mental confusion that commonly affects older people admitted to hospital. 96% of cases are experienced by older people. When older people with Dementia experience severe illness or trauma such as hip fracture they are more at risk of Delirium. This causes distress to patients, families and carers and has potentially serious consequences such as the likelihood of admission to long term care and increased mortality. People with Delirium may need to stay longer in Hospital and have increased incidence of Dementia and Hospital acquired complications such as falls and pressure ulcers.

Why Is It Important?
It is estimated in the UK there are at least 90,000 people with long term urinary catheters (using them for three months or more).
Catheterisation is a common procedure, yet it carries many risks including trauma, urinary tract infection, encrustation, urethral perforation, bladder calculi neoplastic changes, and those with spinal injuries there is the risk of autonomic dysreflexia.
About 1 in 5 people who stay in hospital are fitted with a catheter, sometimes just as a matter of routine rather than requirement. It should therefore be the therapy of choice only when all other interventions are deemed to be inappropriate or have been unsuccessful.

This training course is intended to cover all aspects of pressure area care including practical application within a classroom or virtual environment.
Why Is It Important?
The 2009 Parkside Nursing Home tragedy marked a turning point in raising awareness for pressure area care training. 5 residents within their care died between July 22nd and August 6th as a direct response from pressure ulcers developed during their admission. 
Since 2009 various initiatives have been introduced, however incidents of pressure ulcers remain at a disappointingly high level. Each year in the NHS in England, just under a quarter of a million patients develop a new pressure ulcer with, on average, 2000 newly acquired pressure ulcers developing each month (Public Health England, 2015). 
Pressure ulcers are the result of tissue damage caused by diminishing blood supply to the skin, usually because the area has been placed under pressure (NPUAP/EPUAP/PPPIA, 2014). It is felt 95% of all pressure sores are avoidable.

Why Is It Important?

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2018) requires practitioners to maintain an appropriate level of competence in their skills. The National Patient Safety Agency also emphasises that all practitioners involved in administering injectable medicines must have the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude to prepare and administer prescribed medications safely.
Unsafe injection practices can have significant consequences for patients, including nerve damage, abscesses, and pain, which can result in potential legal action. Therefore, it is essential for healthcare professionals to receive Injection Administration Training to ensure that they are providing optimal care to patients and avoiding adverse events.

<p>Stages of work include:</p>

<li><strong>Transfering the image onto tracing paper.</strong>&nbsp;We will use tracing paper not only to transfer the design but also to learn and explore the shape and the line.</li>
<li><strong>Transferring finished drawings onto a panel</strong>&nbsp;covered with layers of gesso.</li>
<li><strong>Redrawing with paint.</strong>&nbsp;At this stage, students will start learning how to make paints using egg yolk and dry pigments.</li>
<li><strong>Once all&nbsp;</strong>surfaces are covered with enough layers of ground we can start building shapes using lights. In icon painting, we don&rsquo;t build shapes with shadows.</li>
<li><strong>Gilding</strong>&nbsp;&ndash; we will be working for real gold leaf. You will be guided step by step in this process to learn the traditional method of gilding. We will be working with oil gilding.</li>
<li><strong>Applying</strong>&nbsp;final lights and highlights. Finishing.</li>
<li><strong>It is recommended</strong>&nbsp;to wait at least a few weeks before varnishing the finished icon painted in egg tempera. Guidance and demonstration will be provided.</li>

For many years she has been mainly working in a very traditional style learning the language of the icon. When she came to Edinburgh she started exploring other &lsquo;&rsquo;languages&rsquo;&rsquo; searching for more personal and contemporary ways of depicting similar reality. Her development as an artist is a process of uncovering a truth about who we are as human beings and what we need to become whole. Icon painting as a spiritual practice grows in silence and stillness.</p>
<p>Graduated from The Maria Grzegorzewska Academy of Special Education, MA and College of Iconography (Policealne Studium Ikonograficzne) in Bielsk Podlaski in 2008.<br />She has been working for major icon-painting workshops in Poland. Organized many private workshops and residential courses.</p>

Basia will guide you in the way that you will be able to introduce your ideas into the image.
The course will include demonstrations of every stage of creating an icon.
Students will be guided to complete their icons in a traditional Russian method but also encouraged to look for their own voice.
In the demonstrations, Basia will try to include her own personal style.
Stages of work include:
Transfering the image onto tracing paper. We will use tracing paper not only to transfer the design but also to learn and explore the shape and the line.
Transferring finished drawings onto a panel covered with layers of gesso.
Redrawing with paint. At this stage, students will start learning how to make paints using egg yolk and dry pigments.
Once all surfaces are covered with enough layers of ground we can start building shapes using lights. In icon painting, we don’t build shapes with shadows.
Gilding – we will be working for real gold leaf. You will be guided step by step in this process to learn the traditional method of gilding. We will be working with oil gilding.
Applying final lights and highlights. Finishing.
It is recommended to wait at least a few weeks before varnishing the finished icon painted in egg tempera. Guidance and demonstration will be provided.
