A private training centre offering a range of upholstery and soft furnishings courses from beginner to advanced and in both modern and traditional upholstery. We provide training courses for recreational and professional purposes. Courses range from 1 day to 12 weeks.

jenni's rag rugs

I have been recycling textiles into rugs and teaching rag rug making since 1986, using traditional rag rug techniques of hooking, progging and plaiting. I believe in re-using, sourcing locally and treading lightly on the planet. My early work was informed by mythology, lore and ethnic art. Recent work has focused more on texture, colour and twentieth century art movements, with Nature as a continuous inspiration. Whilst bringing rag rug making into the twenty-first century, I honour the generations of ordinary people who used their cast-off clothing to make rugs out of necessity. I love helping people to explore their creativity through such an accessible medium and offer courses locally and around the country. I work to commission, exhibit and sell rugs, kits, rug making tools and equipment. I am a member of the Worcestershire Guild – Contemporary Craft, the Creative Breaks Association, the International Guild of Handhooking Rug Makers, TAFA, lowimpact.org and the Heritage Crafts Association. I give talks and demonstrations locally and workshops from the Welsh Marches to the Cotswolds. In 2003 Traplet Publications published my book RAG RUG MAKING, reprinted in 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2014 (currently sold out) and MORE RAG RUGS & Recycled Textile Projects, in 2011, available from me. I love textiles! The colours, textures, the way they are made, their cultural and historical meanings – all of these things fascinate me. I have collected textiles for as long as I can remember. Being a lampshade maker and upholsterer allows me to work with all sorts of fabrics and I revel in making unique, one of a kind peices of furniture and ligting.

I find joy in craft and the handmade and I’m so lucky that I get to hand make my own products everyday. I live in Brighton where I grew up, I’m an avid tea drinker, a colour lover and I find happiness in being outdoors and in nature. Lume lighting is based in a small sunny studio at the bottom of Albert Mews in Brighton & Hove, UK. From here I hand make contemporary and traditional sewn lampshades using Lume’s own collection of printed fabrics and a range of luxury linens. Alongside my expertly designed lampshades, there are unique fairy lights and pendant lights to add interest and fun to your home. I am a skilled lampshade maker and have been expertly manufacturing lampshades since 2014. After adding contemporary drum lampshades to my range of homewares, I found a love for lampshades and decided to focus on lighting and rebranded my homewares business from ‘Joanna Corney’ to ‘Lume Lighting’ in 2018. Being a trained printed textile designer means that my lampshades are unique as they are made using my own exclusive screen and lino printed fabric. I am skilled in the traditional methods of soft lampshade making as well as hard backed contemporary styles, and offer a bespoke made to order and lampshade recovering service.

We are makers of beautiful drum lampshades and specialise particularly in Peony & Sage linens. We offer a wide range of fabric designs handmade by us as straight sided or tapered drum shades. Whether it is a country, coastal or more neutral theme you are looking for, we have a wide selection! We can also make up bespoke shades in fabric provided by you, or larger drum shades for floor lamps or ceiling lights. Or if there is a Peony & Sage fabric that you love but is not shown here, just ask as we can make lampshades in almost any of those beautiful designs - conditions apply. I’m the eldest of three girls, and as we were growing up, our mum made wedding dresses, upholstered furniture and created most of our clothes on her sewing machine. So I think it was inevitable that one of us would grow up with a creative streak. I’ve always enjoyed making things, not all of my ventures have been successful, but since moving into our current house and being somewhat uninspired by the range of beige lampshades on offer on the high street, I decided to learn how to make my own. Since that day I’ve become addicted. I feel lucky to have found a way to combine my love of beautiful fabrics with interiors – and spread the lampshade love to homes across Yorkshire and beyond. It’s something I take great pride in. I’m passionate about helping clients find that perfect fabric to match their new scheme and make them something unique – something they couldn’t find on the High Street. I also love teaching people how to make their own, on my lampshade making workshops – the smile as their lampshade starts to take shape is priceless.
