Big Bold Hangings

5.0(10)

By Stevie Davies

Craft workshop where you have a go at simple glass cutting before layering your chosen colours up with textural details to produce your own Big Bold Hanging. Fused Glass Workshop – Big Bold Hangings I want to share my 15+ years of experience with you. This in person fused glass workshop is held at my Derbyshire studio and gallery space in the middle of Wirksworth near Matlock. About this fused glass workshop For this workshop I’ll give you a base piece of clear glass (precut and with a hole drilled (approx 30x5cm) for you to decorate with stripes of your favourite colours. I prepare lots of transparent glass to give you lots of strips to cut to length yourself. Build a design and layer as you like with extra textural details to really personalise your make. This is a great introduction to glass cutting, anyone can do it with the tips and tricks I’ll show you. The main thing to remember is to have fun! You will play with different types of decorative glass elements and learn a little about how the kiln firing will change them. Simply complete your design during the session and leave it at the studio for me to fire, clean and finish with a lovely ribbon, ready for you to display and enjoy. We will arrange for you to collect your piece after a few weeks or I can post your finished piece at cost. I will talk through all the Health & Safety in the session but I want you to know now, you will be handling precut glass pieces, they have pointy ends but with the right handling, they won’t hurt you. Recommended for ages 13+, all under 16s to be accompanied by a paying adult. Photos shown here (and on my facebook page) are previous students makes. Book with friends or come on your own for a supportive and fun creative fused glass workshop experience. All fused glass workshop attendees receive a 10% discount on purchases from the gallery shop on the day, just a little way I can say thank you for joining me! Things to bring with you: A bottle of water or travel cup of coffee/tea. An apron or old clothes so you don’t have to worry about getting glue or other materials on them. Pictures or images that inspire you, even if it’s just for colour reference but remember we will be a limited to the effects achievable with the materials and tools though. An open mind and willingness to experiment. Booking When booking make sure your email address is correct at checkout as I will email you any further information needed for the workshop. Please also include a contact phone number in the unlikely event that I need to cancel a workshop at short notice. Venue: Create Space Studio & Gallery, 27 Market Place, Wirksworth, Matlock DE4 4ET  Currently, the washroom facilities in the studio shop aren’t the best, they probably won’t ever be perfect but I do have a working w.c and sink now, just behind a curtain. I would still recommend considering supporting one of the independent cafés, restaurants and pubs who would welcome some extra business in return for a comfort break. Craft workshop using a variety including glass cutting along with designing with dichroic glass elements to make sparkling glass jewellery. Fused Glass Workshop – Glitzy Glass Jewellery I want to share my 15+ years of experience with you. This fused glass workshop is held at my Derbyshire studio and gallery space in the middle of Wirksworth, near Matlock. About this fused glass workshop Everyone loves sparkle and this workshop is perfect for making wearable art for yourself or to give as give away as gifts. After a brief introduction to how to work safely with glass, I will teach you the technique of cutting and layering sheet glass to produce your own unique creations. The process of cutting is a skill that takes time to develop but wonderful designs can be built from basic shapes. No experience necessary, just an understanding that you might not be “perfect” straight away. I’m told I make it look easy, but I’ve been doing it, almost daily, for 15 years! Produce a range of unique jewellery using specialist glass called Dichroic Glass, a rainbow of colours and a myriad of decorative inclusions, you will design and make jewellery pieces including pendants, earrings, cufflinks and brooches. Your creations will need to be fired, cleaned and finished by Stevie so will be ready in around three weeks. The materials cost will enable you to make at least 3 (maybe 4) pieces in the time, maybe more depending on your chosen designs and how quickly you work. Please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss any queries you may have, big or small and make sure to find me on Instagram and facebook to keep up to date with all the sparkles and to see images of previous students work. Dragonfly Glass Art

I have been making pieces in copper foil stained glass for the last six years. It all started when I enrolled in an adult education course at my local college. Deciding that I wanted one evening a week to do something completely different and creative, the stained glass course jumped out of the page of the brochure at me. After only three evenings of learning, I was totally hooked, counting down the days until the next Wednesday! Not only was it exciting to be learning such a traditional craft, but I got to meet such a wonderful group of people in my class, all from very different walks of life. Some aspects were highly frustrating, cutting glass was the first hurdle to overcome. I practised in between lessons and started to get the hang of it after quite a few glass cuts! Next, soldering would prove to be a real challenge. When melted, it seemed to have its own mind and didn’t want to flow where you were expecting it to. It took all of us many weeks to learn the various stages of producing what seems now, a very small and untidy first piece of work. But the pride in having made something from start to finish was immense. By this time, it was November and Christmas was approaching fast. I had decided to put my new found craft to use and make a few small Christmas decorations as presents for family. Friends at work were intrigued by my new hobby, and as soon as I had finished making the decorations, I took them in to work so they could see what I had spent all my free time obsessing over! On the first day I took them in, I had twelve requests to make some more! I was elated that people liked my work so much, they were willing to pay me for it. I was also slightly concerned that it was only a couple of weeks until we finished for Christmas! But I accepted the challenge and decided I had to aim to make one decoration per evening. The intense practise meant my glass cutting and soldering skills improved rapidly. All the orders were completed just in time and I had earned money from doing something I absolutely loved. The money was re- invested in to buying more sheets of glass!
