You will explore techniques including sifting; sgraffito; stenciling; drawing on enamelled surfaces with graphite pencils; using wet pens and painting with wet enamels. This course is ideal for students with no experience of enamelling. However, more experienced students can join the course and use the time to further experiment with these techniques or try them for the first time. To see the day in action see our Instagram post here DURING THIS DAY SESSION YOU WILL… Learn how to prepare copper before enamelling. Understand how to fire enamels to the right temperatures to create attractive results. Practice how to sift onto copper to create an even surface to be able to decorate it. Explore and practice sgrafitto and stenciling enamelling techniques. Learn how to draw onto enamelled surfaces using graphite pencils. Learn how to wash enamels and use them to paint patterns onto enamelled surfaces. Understand the principles decorating metal with enamels and the processes of firing enamels at the correct temperatures to achieve specific effects. You will be shown a series of demonstrations throughout the day and can try all of the techniques demonstrated or you can decide to concentrate on a particular technique – this is your ay to explore enamelling and the vast potential it offers. Please note, this day is not focussed on working on finished designs or working with silver. Enamelling takes time to learn and explore. You will be working with a series of copper blanks – some of which have holes so you are able to slot them onto earring hooks or place a jump ring on them for a pendant if you are pleased with your sample. The aim of the course is to introduce you to the techniques and processes and for you to experiment and put into practice what you have been shown, not to create finished designs at this stage, this will be something you can work towards once you have gained some experience. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: None, all abilities are welcomed. We support you throughout the session and provide demonstrations to show you the techniques and steps needed to create your project. CLASS SIZE: 6 WHAT IS INCLUDED? All tools and consumables are supplied. We will supply copper sheet for your samples, but please feel free to bring along any pierced designs you might have of your own or anything you would like to experiment with. YOU WILL BE PROVIDED WITH: Copper sheet is supplied. WHAT TO BRING: A sketch book – to note your practices throughout the day, especially important for those who would like to recreate their samples again at home or on future occasions. If you want to bring along any silver to experiment with, you are welcome to do so. Please wear closed toe shoes – no sandals or flip flops as you will be working with hot metal and tools. Please bring along any lunch, snacks and drinks for the session. We have tea and coffee supplies you are welcome to help yourself to but make sure you bring enough refreshments and supplies to keep you going during the day. Adam specialises in free blown glass. His vessels and sculptures are at once a celebration of the simplicity of pure form, and also an investigation into layering. His coloured patinas draw on painterly techniques and are predominately inspired by a love of nature, especially the play of light on water and the landscape. He is a consummate colourist, and the Impressionist painters -Turner, Whistler, Monet and others – have been a significant inspiration for his work. “I think of my work as a story of surface and form. Each blown glass artwork is a canvas, depicting landscape in a variety of abstracted ways; a shimmering moment of reflection, capturing river and sea, coastline, forest and desert, as light passes over and through. Glass contains its own dynamic of reflection and refraction, and balancing the relationship between form and surface is often challenging. I explore the organic form of each sculpture, celebrating the natural flow and force of molten glass, sometimes leaving behind traditional requirements for functionality. “Sometimes I start with a defined idea, but the intuitive way in which I work means that on occasions I’ll notice unexpected aspects of the developing form and how they relate to the palette I am using. It’s almost as if the evolving piece influences the way it turns out. People often say that glass has a life of its own and it is only when you actually make glass that you understand what this means. I’ve been developing a vocabulary of forms for some years, and these range from the early simple canvases to the more recent organic surfaces.” Adam’s work has been exhibited all over the world and can be found in numerous private collections from royalty to rock stars. Over the years, he has been commissioned to make work for the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Italy’s venerable Salviati glass studio, the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the UK’s National Art Collections Fund and The British Museum, among others. Adam’s work has been shown at the prestigious Sotheby’s Contemporary Decorative Arts exhibition in London, and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, in New York City. Adam is a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen (FSDC) and chair of their Selection Committee. He is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and Adam is also a member of many glass related societies and organisations, including the Contemporary Glass Society, and The Glass Society, which was formed from the merger of the Glass Association and the Glass Circle. Adam is also an active member of the Surrey Sculpture Society and the Surrey Guild of Craftsmen, as well as the Oxford Sculptors Group. Adam has exhibited and demonstrated at Art in Action, the annual arts and crafts event at Waterperry Gardens in Oxfordshire.

Workshop 925 launched in January 2019 and is based at The Mayford Centre which is nestled between Guildford and Woking in Surrey. The workshop was launched by Kirsten Hendrich after several years teaching within adult education facilities, alongside running her own jewellery brand Kirsten Hendrich Jewellery. Kirsten often felt frustrated at large class sizes, the lack of specialist equipment and solid workbenches to allow students to really blossom. So, she began her vision which was to create the perfect learning environment for jewellers of all levels to come and learn new skills using professional equipment, providing the best chance possible for students to learn the technical and business skills of the trade within small class sizes enabling plenty of one to one tutor support to aid effective learning.

New Ashgate Gallery, a non-profit making trust, cultivates the pursuit of excellence in a marketplace environment, with support to emerging artists, by exhibiting work and through professional development. We promote the creative process for all communities through workshops, talks and outreach work. We provide an unparalleled resource in Farnham, Surrey and beyond. History In doing all this we have a direct line of continuity with our beginnings. Elizabeth Naydler, who founded the Gallery in 1959, had aspirations to bring quality art to Farnham, with the first provincial exhibitions of nationally and internationally known sculptors and artists such as Henry Moore, Anthony Caro, Elizabeth Frink, Barbara Hepworth, Picasso, Sandra Blow, Mary Fedden, Peter Blake, whilst at the same nurturing local talent and helping the careers of the next generation of artists and crafts people through exhibitions, sale of work and prizes and scholarships. The Gallery moved into Waggon Yard in 1966 - in 2016 the Trust celebrated its 50th anniversary in the 17th century Grade II building in in the centre of the Farnham Craft Town. During the years, the gallery has administered the profits from craft and art sales to create prizes and scholarships, and for the purchase of artworks for local and national museums. It was one of the first provincial galleries to show artists with an international reputation as well as supporting local talent.
