Mutleys Dog Training

Bristol

Mutleys offers dog training classes to puppies and older dogs, as well as one to one training for puppies and dogs. Mutleys uses gentle positive training techniques and reward based training to ensure that your dog learns in a fun and positive environment. Mutleys concentrates on puppy socialisation, getting a good start in life for all pups and educating owners to better understand the way the dog learns. We run puppy socialisation and training classes with guidance on common puppy problems. This is the most important time in a dog's life and it is important that the owner has guidance and understands how to train and communicate with their dogs to prevent problems from occurring. We also work with older dogs that may just be joining you and need to start their training a little later in life, or dogs that missed out on puppy classes and are now requiring a bit of help, we can discuss their needs and get them into the correct level of training. The most important part of the training is for the owner to understand the reasons behind the techniques used and realise why and how they work. The trainers are willing to discuss individual training or behavioural problems and look at these with the group or individually. The trainer will also assist with puppy socialisation and the prevention of problem behaviour occurring in the first place to make your dog much more fun to live with. As well as group training sessions, one to one training can be organised for basic training and early puppy advice and training, using positive reward based methods. You will be living with your dog for many years and it is important that you have a good bond and relationship with your dog. We can help you to teach your dog how to behave so you are not frustrated and cross with them and they know what is expected so you can all live comfortably and happily together! Mutleys offers a variety of Association or Pet Dog Trainer (APDT) Good Companion Awards - Puppy, foundation, Progress and Jubilee, just ask for details. Mutleys, based in Clifton, Bristol, has been running since 2005. A branch in Frampton Cotterell, North Bristol has been running since June 2016 and this year (2021) we have opened a new venue on the Hanham/St George border.

At present I have two Labradors, and have owned and trained several Labradors and a German Shepherd (a rescue dog) as well as the family’s Shetland Sheepdogs and Miniature Schnauzers (together with a variety of birds and small furries!). I have been training dogs for over 35 years in a variety of disciplines, including Obedience; Agility; Gun Dog Training; Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme; Obedience Rally; Companion Dog Training - and even for a short film, “Her Dog” (2013), which you can watch online! Qualifications I have an Honours (2:1) degree in Ecology & Ethology, a MSc (Merit pass) in Applied Animal Behaviour & Welfare from the Royal (Dick) Vet School, University of Edinburgh; and a Doctorate (PhD) in Ecological Studies. KCAI logo large-min.JPG I have been helping owners train their pets in both classes and on a 1-2-1 basis for the last 10 years and initially qualified as a dog trainer with a local charity in 2011, before becoming a member of the Kennel Club Accreditation Scheme for Instructors in Dog Training and Canine Behaviour (KCAI). I am a KC Good Citizen Dog Scheme Approved Examiner (List A) for Bronze, Silver and Gold Award Levels. Drawing upon my formal behavioural, welfare and ecological training I can identify and resolve behavioural problems which cause a lot of distress for both dogs and their owners. I have a particular interest in helping dogs with anxiety or fear-related issues and investigated this for my MSc Dissertation: Investigating Relaxation Protocols designed for Companion Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris): Efficacy, Client Engagement and Perception. I am interested in Dog Cognition and understanding how recent scientific developments can be applied to Pet Dog Training and to help you understand the real reasons behind your dogs behaviours.

I specialise in working with the owners of pet dogs to improve their relationship with their dog. Many of the common obedience and behaviour problems such as pulling on the lead, refusing to come back when called, jumping up on people etc. can be cured relatively quickly with my help. I can also help dog owners overcome behaviour problems such as separation anxiety, destructive behaviour, over excitement etc. I prefer to work with the owners during the process, fully involving them in the training process which gives them a better understanding of canine behaviour and how dogs respond to human emotions and body language. A number of common behavioural issues which many pet dogs exhibit can be related back to a lack of basic obedience training. For example refusing to come back when called. What usually happens here is the owner has a few bad experiences when the dog has ran off and refused to come back so the owner decides that the dog will not be let off the lead again. The result the dog becomes frustrated due to a lack of exercise (most dogs require at least 30 minutes free running exercise a day) he returns home with loads of unused energy and looks for ways to use it up. Chewing your possessions or property, pacing up and down and whining, are all favourites. If you are experiencing any of the above problems with your dog, I can help, you do not have to put up with it. You can use the website contact form or give me a call now on 07872 575672 for a friendly, no obligation chat.
