Idler is a company devoted to helping people to lead more fulfilled lives. We publish a bi-monthly magazine, produce online courses and run live events. Our story Back in 1991, bored to tears by his job, 23 year old journalist Tom Hodgkinson lay on his bed and dreamed of starting a magazine called The Idler. He’d found the title in a collection of essays by Dr Johnson, himself a constitutionally indolent man. How to live, that was the question. How to be free in a world of jobs and debt? And curse this alarm clock. Tom was fortunately sacked from his job and started to sign on. He wandered across the road to where his old friend, designer and writer Gavin Pretor-Pinney lived. Gavin was the kind of person who could help Tom to realise this dream. And he did. In August 1993, the pair produced issue one of the Idler. It had the sub-title “literature for loafers”. Dr Johnson was the cover star and there was an interview with magic mushroom guru Terence McKenna. Contributors included a young journalist called Louis Theroux (pictured above at the Idler Festival, 2019). The magazine has since enjoyed a number of incarnations. In the nineties it was published by the Guardian newspaper, then by Ebury publishing. Tom published the Idler as an annual collection of essays until 2014, then relaunched the mag in 2016. Victoria Hull and Tom Hodgkinson Victoria Hull and Tom Hodgkinson The Idler Academy The Idler Academy, founded at a festival in 2010, is the Idler’s educational offshoot. It is a school which offers online courses in the classical liberal arts and practical skills. From March 2011 to December 2015 we ran a small bookshop, café and event venue in Notting Hill. The Idler Academy teaches philosophy, calligraphy, music, business skills, English grammar, ukulele, public speaking, singing, dancing, drawing, self-defence and other subjects. Here you can educate yourself in the ideas of Plato or learn the ukulele, either online or at an event or retreat. A dancing lesson with the Mudflappers at Festival No 6 The Idler Academy was born at a festival. Founders Tom and his partner Victoria Hull had always been festival-goers, and in 2008 they were invited by the founders of the Secret Garden Party to run a series of literary talks. They were given a yurt and built a medieval garden in the shade of a lime tree. They put on talks from Crass’s Penny Rimbaud, QI’s John Mitchinson, poet Clare Pollard and radical economist Andrew Simms. In 2009 Tom and Victoria took the Idler Academy to the Port Eliot Festival in Cornwall. They have also appeared at Wilderness, Shambala, Byline and the Good Life Experience. Healthy Human was first established in 2018.  At the time both Nicky and Alison were in practice and looking for a partner to help them create a 360 method to supporting clients back to better health and happiness. In 2019 they found each other and 'Healthy Human 360' was born.  As lockdown hit Nicky and Alison decided to move their programmes online so that anyone could access them, despite the current restrictions.  This move turned out to beneficial in even more ways, for example for those who didn't live in the region where Alison and Nicky practice, for clients with busy lives who needed to fit a programme in around their schedule.  An online and on demand course was giving clients total flexibility to go at a pace to suit them and their lives.  They enjoyed that they could repeat or dip back into lessons as often as they liked; and for some the icing on the cake was they didn't have to expose themselves to a gym or weight watching club, which can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming or scary.  You're in good hands   Nicky and Alison's evidence based health programmes are crafted from years of experience and specialist knowledge.  The 360 method ensures a higher success rate; with easy to follow and progressive steps, clients are able to move from being stuck and unhappy to a better place of health, in better shape, and with a whole new mindset.   Both partners also continue practices in their respective areas of specialism.  For a bit more of an insight into your therapists, Alison and Nicky, read on... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALISON BRAITHWAITE MSC, CIPD Alison has been working in the wellbeing sector for nearly 20 years and is a qualified holistic therapist and life coach, with a deep understanding of mental health having worked in that sector of the NHS since 2007.  During her time with the NHS Alison has provided coaching and mentorship for numerous NHS staff within the Yorkshire and Humber region, as part of a volunteer scheme run by the NHS Leadership Academy. In her practice and courses she combines traditional coaching with a range of holistic therapies (including Reiki and aromatherapy) and with psychotherapy approaches (including meditative hypnosis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)), this is both powerful and unique.   Alison qualified with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in 2003 as a trainer, and today is an experienced trainer, facilitator, and course designer.   Continuing to keep a presence in mental health, wellbeing, equality and diversity; Alison holds a part time position within the NHS, working across the country's health and care system as the Deputy Director for a small and impactful team called Thrive by Design [https://www.thrivebydesign.org.uk/] You can also take Reiki and crystal courses with Alison through the British Reiki Circle [https://british-reiki-circle.cademy.co.uk/] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NICOLA SAINTY DIP. Eden Wedding Florist and Flower School Eden is a Wedding Florist and Flower School based near Taunton, set up in 1999 by Jane Cowling. At the end of 2014, Eden specialised to concentrate on providing top quality wedding flowers and their rapidly expanding Flower School. Eden have recently moved from their Town centre location to a beautiful countryside studio in Higher Ford. Eden is a team of two very talented Florists who have accolades such as Gold Medals at Chelsea Flower Show and widespread success in other national and international competitions. One of the most rewarding things is the transformation from students saying ‘I will never be able to make a design like that’ to ‘wow! I did make a design like that!’ It’s great passing on the knowledge Jane opened her first flower shop at the age of 19, after an upbringing in catering. A pretty tea rooms with a florist business at the back in her home town of Bampton in Mid Devon caught her eye. Within a few months, the flower bug had bitten. It soon dominated and the flower business grew and grew into a successful, well known, design led florist in it’s current location in Taunton, now specialized as a wedding florist and flower school. Achievements: – Jane has a level 5 Master diploma in floristry, has competed in many national competitions, the most recent being the prestigious ‘RHS Chelsea Florist Of The Year’ competition in 2017, She’s hoping to find the time to challenge herself again soon. She has also featured in national floristry publications and taught at Bicton College in South Devon. Jane’s fondness of teaching was indulged with the move to St.James Street in Taunton where she launched Eden Flower School running workshops, short courses and demonstrations in the distinctive ‘Eden’ style. Jane lives on the outskirts of Wiveliscombe in rural Somerset with her husband and two sons. My Floristry highlight was being crowned Chelsea florist of the year 2014 at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show with my Gold medal winning ‘fantasy floral dress' Lisa started her career in floristry straight from secondary school, when stumbling upon an advertisement for an apprenticeship as a florist in her home town of Chard. Floristry hadn’t even occurred to her but a natural talent and passion for floral design has seen her work her way from apprentice in Chard to Manager at Eden in Taunton where she has been since the beginning of Eden. Lisa’s main role is assisting Jane with the wedding flowers and anything technical, but she has been known to teach the occasional class at Eden’s flower school, her specialty being the paper wreath designs! Achievements: – Lisa has a level 4 Higher diploma in floristry, she studied at The Academy of Floral Design, and was taught by English Dutch Master Tina Parkes. She is a keen competitor in the floristry world, competing in national and international competitions, The most prestigious being crowned Chelsea florist of the year 2014 with her Gold medal winning ‘fantasy floral frock at Chelsea flower show. She competed again at Chelsea 2015 and gained another gold with her Tulgey Woods inspired fantasy floral tree. Other wins include a silver medal at the Chelsea flower show competing for Chelsea Florist of the Year 2012 with her diamond jubilee chandelier and 2 silver & 3 bronze awards in Fusion flowers International designer of the year 2010 & 2011 &2013 and the most recent is a silver medal for RHS Chelsea Flower show 2018.
