Online Course Tackling Sustainability & Climate Change  & How we can deliver this through a textiles lens


This course uses presentations and materials collated for the Textiles Action For A Sustainable Future conference in June 2023. It focuses on sustainability and climate change, and how textiles education can make practical differences, using case studies approaches from businesses, NGOs and teachers.

The UK Government legislation to meet net zero by 2050, involves us all to act in order to achieve the 25 Year Environment Plan and Net Zero Strategy. This includes the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals and UNESCO’s ‘Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for 2030’, which sets out the key role of education in the successful achievement of the goals.

UK GOVERNMENT POLICY PAPER: Sustainability and Climate Change: A strategy for the education and children’s services systems.

Education is crucial in equipping and empowering children and young people with the tools to tackle the climate change challenge. This event aims to give up-to-date information, advice and practical guidance on integrating climate education into D&T and Art & Design Textiles courses. 
This course looks at the Fashion & Textiles industry and the British schools curriculum, with presentations from sustainability experts from high street clothing brands such as PRIMARK & Marks & Spencers, designers, manufacturers and education, talking about and giving examples of how they are tackling the challenges of becoming climate and environmentally friendly. They identify and outline how a step change in climate and sustainability education can be made, so that young people have the skills and knowledge needed for the twenty-first century.
The course also looks at the NATIONAL CLIMATE EDUCATION ACTION PLAN which emerged from the Climate Education Summit in September 2021, organised by Reading University, one of the world's leading centres for the study of climate.






The aims are to:
Understand the current global issues of sustainability and climate change
Focus on the sustainability agenda for textiles education
Look at case studies of high-street brands and how they are tackling these issues
Look at the current national education agenda and how this directly affects what we do
Explore practical ways in which the textile teaching community can integrate sustainability and climate change education in the classroom
Look at how we can provide life changing opportunities for all pupils.



Why is this important?
Currently, young people in the UK face a ‘lottery’ with regards to climate/sustainability education and subjects, such as textiles, which desperately needs perceptions and attitudes changing. The textiles industry is one of the largest polluters, users of valuable resources and producers of waste. Young people, teachers, and experts from across a breadth of subjects are calling for change and textiles teaching can support this.
There is a huge need for essential skills and knowledge, to prepare for the challenges of a changing climate, to be taught across the curriculum. Appropriate training and support for all staff within schools and colleges, including teachers, leaders and governors, is also essential.
Climate and sustainability are such important issues and we hope to update you on what is already happening both nationally and locally and support you in delivering this through your teaching.

The Tempestry Project combines fibre art and climate data to visually represent temperature trends through knitted or crocheted tapestries, known as “Tempestries.” Each piece reflects daily high temperatures for a specific year and location—starting with January at the bottom and ending with December at the top, much like a vertical bar graph. Standardized yarn colors and temperature ranges ensure consistency across all Tempestries, creating a powerful and personal way to engage with climate change data.

This course is aimed at any one interested in understanding how to make, fit and alter a Skirt blocks to get a perfect fit. No two people have exactly the same shape. once you have constructed block or made a test sample you will need to construct a toile to check the fit and make change if required. If you are a home sewer, thinking of starting a fashion micro business, a new BA textiles or fashion student, a textiles or DT teacher, or a student studying textiles at school, this course is for you. You can work with a skirt block constructed from Textiles Skills Centre Simple Basic block course, a block you have already constructed, the size 12 skirt block provided, or you could use a commercial simple pencil skirt pattern.

We have an extensive range of PLC training courses available covering all PLC manufacturers and levels of expertise from the complete novice to the advanced. ALL of our training courses can be tailoured to your own requirements. ALL our courses will be based on the relevant software and hardware. We aim to make ALL our courses as practical as possible, leading to ‘real world’ skills and not just theoretical skills. No prior knowledge is required for this course as it starts from scratch and assumes no previous experience, you will reach the skilled level where you can look at becoming a programmer, get into engineering maintenance in an industrial environment, fault find or make amendments to programs, this is the course for you. The ‘Typical’ 5 day course usually covers 2 or 3 of the major manufacturers, Siemens S7, Allen Bradley and Mitsubishi (This can be amended to other manufacturers if you have a particular requirement). The course aims to be 90% practical, as we believe the easiest way to learn is to do it! Every student works on their own dedicated training rig and computer, enabling you to get the most from the course. A full set of course notes and a USB drive full of other manuals is provided at the end of the course. What is the AM2 assessment? The AM2 assessment is an industry recognised trade test designed to evidence that candidates have gained all relevant and safety-critical competencies during their training process. It provides a single standard that has been agreed upon by employers within the electrical industry, giving a reliable and trusted guarantee of safe, high-quality skills for the electrotechnical industry. Who is this for? This is aimed at apprentices who are coming to the end of their training for the JIB apprentice training scheme and the Installation of modern apprenticeships. This course is also for experienced electricians, specifically those who are looking at taking the experienced worker route (AM2E.) There are a range of assessments for candidates based on their level: AM2 – This is for candidates undertaking the JIB mature candidate assessments and those following the level three NVQ who isn’t an apprentice. AM2S – This is for electrotechnical apprentices who are training against the apprenticeship standard AM2E – This is for experienced workers who are completing the experienced worker assessment. Please note: this can only be taken once you have gained the experienced worker qualification, proof must be provided before booking the AM2 assessment. What does this assessment consist of? Overall, the AM2 is an in-depth assessment carrying out tasks to show what you have learnt on your training. It is a practical assessment with five sections (six for AM2E and AM2S) and a short online component. Candidates will be expected to install, connect, terminate, inspect, test, commission and diagnose faults, following installation specifications provided and any relevant statutory and non-statutory regulations on: A three-phase distribution board and subcircuit A central heating/sustainable energy system Lighting and power circuits A data cabling system A safety services circuit and device Installation of containment systems (AM2E and AM2S only) Candidates will complete timed tasks in equipped areas that contain typical electrical installation wiring systems – all work must comply with BS7671 Wiring Regulations, industry best practice, and meet the requirements of relevant health and safety legislation. The assessment will be carried out in strict exam conditions across 2.5 days. Do I need an AM2 certificate to work as an electrician? Apprentices must pass their AM2 test in their final year to complete their apprenticeship. Also, if the apprenticeship standard is not being followed, an AM2 certificate and a level three NVQ is required to gain a gold card. If you are already working as an electrician, you will not need an AM2 certificate. If you are training to be an electrician and are registering for your NVQ level three in Electrical Installation or Maintenance, the electrotechnical diploma now includes the AM2. The AM2 certification is an industry recognised and something that many employers will actively seek when hiring new staff. It can also be attractive to potential customers.
