Glasgow's Suomi-koulu was founded in 2005. The school's mission is to promote and support the Finnish language skills, Finnish identity, and Finnish culture and history of bilingual (multiple) and Finnish-speaking children and young people living in Britain. In several places, such as Glasgow, Finnish schools form the core of the Finnish network in the region. All Finns, including those without children, with their friends and families are welcome to the school, for example just to meet new people and acquaintances over a cup of coffee or to borrow books from our library. The school organizes lessons for school-aged children and there is a playgroup for the youngest in the family. We aim to organize an excursion once a year. Every year, the school organizes a Christmas party with traditional Finnish Christmas treats. The school also has a small kiosk, which is open on school days where you can buy Finnish candies for the worst homesickness. Welcome!

THE BLACKTHORPE BARN WAS BUILT ROUND 1550, PROBABLY BY JOHN DRURY WHO HAD JUST ACQUIRED THE MANOR OF ROUGHAM THROUGH THE DISSOLUTION OF THE GREAT BENEDICTINE ABBEY AT BURY ST. EDMUNDS IN 1539. It is timber framed with a vast, striking thatched roof measuring over 30 metres long. The barn’s purpose was to be used for the threshing and storage of grain and it continued as a grain store until 1985. You can read more about the barn’s history here. These days the threshing barn and the surrounding buildings are used for events including the festive craft market at Christmas and other art exhibitions during the year, as well as for weddings in the summer months. The Courtyard Café is regularly open at the weekends and other events take place during the year; see the events calendar or follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see what’s on.

My name is Carmela, I am Italian and I hold a full English teaching qualification in Post Compulsory Education and Training (Cert.Ed.)and a Qualified Teaching and Learning Status (QTLS).I also have a BA degree in Post Compulsory Education and Training from Warwick University. I have been teaching Italian for over ten years privately and for colleges. I have taught Italian at the Brasshouse language centre in Birmingham, at North Warwickshire & Hinckley College and South Staffordshire College as well as delivering training for companies such as EXD Ltd. in Coventry, Arlani in Burton, Redrock in Birmingham and for private groups, reaching areas in the West Midlands, from Birmingham to Coventry, Warwick to Lichfield and Solihull. ITALIAN LANGUAGE CULTURE AND COOKING WORKSHOPS- ABOUT ME I grew up in a small village in a traditional Neapolitan family where we prepared local and classical Italian dishes, growing and preserving most of the food we ate. Preparing pasta or gnocchi for our Sunday lunch was a family get together event! We all helped and learned how to make things in a traditional way. During the major festivities such as Christmas and Easter the food preparation took weeks and families and friends exchanged their creations: Struffoli, Panettone and Pandoro at Christmas; Pastiera, Tortano or Casatiello at Easter; for Carnival we made Chiacchiere, and for father’s days Zeppole. There were times when we all went to zia’s house to cook pizza and bread in her stone oven… every occasion was special and gave us an excuse to prepare a traditional dish. Therefore, my love for the food and food preparation grew thanks to the area I was born and my family’s customs. When later I travelled as a student, I exchanged recipes with other people and grandmas from Sicily, Puglia and Tuscany. Therefore, the Italian cooking workshop is an opportunity for me to share with you, in my kitchen, what I have learned, and recreate together an authentic Italian experience.

35 Design Space is an interactive studio set up to share craft knowledge and bring creative classes to all. Our classes are hands on and we hope that you learn a new skill and have a great time doing it! We aim to provide a creative learning environment to support and inspire fellow crafters. Alongside offering current and innovative workshop classes we want to promote historical textile crafts and share these endangered crafts to encourage their revival. If you wish to arrange a private event or book a custom made session please get in touch. Our studio can accommodate parties of up to 15. We'd love to help you celebrate occasions such as your birthday, baby shower, hen party and Christmas events with a workshop tailored to you. We're also available to lead corporate team building and mindfulness sessions with a difference. Try turning your hand at some creative crafts and surprise yourself with what you can make!
