By Art and Spirituality CIC

Celebrate the season with us at our Festive Wishing Wreath Workshop, led by renowned artist and spiritual guide Eugenia Rosa, on Saturday 7th December from 4-6 PM at the Art & Spirituality Centre in Edinburgh. Eugenia brings a rich background in both art, ritual, and folk traditions to infuse her workshops with meaning and magic. With her gentle guidance, you’ll create your own unique wreath using natural greenery, colourful decorations, and personal touches that reflect your hopes for the coming season. Why make a wreath? In Celtic tradition, wreaths symbolise the cycle of life, honouring nature’s eternal rhythms as we embrace winter’s darker days and welcome the returning light. Crafted with intention, a wreath can act as a circle of protection, warmth, and blessing for the home, making it a perfect seasonal ritual. What to Expect: Create a Unique Festive Décor Piece: With a range of natural materials provided, you’ll have the chance to design a truly one-of-a-kind wreath that captures your spirit and seasonal intentions. Relaxing and Fun: Take time out from the holiday hustle to immerse yourself in a cosy, creative environment with like-minded community members. Personal & Symbolic Touches: Bring along any personal items, such as small trinkets, ribbons, or symbols, to weave into your wreath, making it even more meaningful. Eugenia will share tips on selecting symbolic materials, the history of wreath-making, and how you can incorporate personal intentions to bring good fortune, warmth, and peace into your home. Spaces are limited, please book early. This class is sponsored by The Volant Charitable Trust Small Grants Programme, administered by Foundation Scotland. Dala Horse Wood Carving Day Workshop

By Alien Spoons

Learn to carve wood starting with this nice little project of a Dala horse. The basic shape has been formed using a bandsaw so you will add detail and learn about carving following the grain of the wood. You will learn safe wood carving techniques using the Mora 120 & 106 wood carving knives, or other Mora knives more suitable for children. Some of these safe carving techniques are the same as those used for carving a range of other treen such as spoons. This is a less strenuous carving project than making a spoon so is also ideal for beginners. We will also cover sharpening knives as this is key to safe carving. Other tools are also available to use and try out. What's included in the price? Tea, coffee and biscuits included. Two Dala horse blanks included, and others available to buy at discount prices. Training in a range of safe carving techniques used for this and other treen. Tools you will need to use during the day. Tools care and sharpening information. Tools available to buy. A PDF of knife grasps to remind you of safe carving techniques.

Two Day Wood Spoon Carving Workshop

By Alien Spoons

I've added this two day workshop because a one day workshop gives you the basics, but two days will allow you to develop your carving technique and use additional knife grasps.  By embedding good technique into the way you carve, you will avoid injuries and additional regular stretching will help you to look after your body. You will leave with the knowledge and confidence to carve safely at home.  You will have access to a range of different tools, starting with the axe to rough out spoon blanks - I have a good range of axes you can try from budget to the Gransfors large carving axe. Next using the Mora wood carving knives (105/106/120) to shape your blanks into spoons following traditional designs for optimising strength and utility. I also have a range of hook knives to try out. Using these traditional tools you will make a spoon from local and sustainable fresh cut green wood (usually willow/birch/alder or cherry) - starting with a log and leaving with a spoon. From the initial splitting of the log, trimming it down with an axe, to carving finer details and decorations with chip carving knives. This course is located close to central Edinburgh and is accessible by public transport.  Depending on the weather it can be inside or outdoors in the wildlife garden. Courses can also be arranged to suit your availability! Please email to discuss your requirements, discounts are available for small groups or multiple days. Course numbers are usually limited to five or less; individual training courses can also be arranged. What's included in the price? Tea, coffee, light lunch of bread and soup and snacks. Professional training in the use of a range of traditional tools. Advice on tool care and sharpening. Fresh cut (green) wood for carving. Some tools available for sale at competitive rates.

One Day Wood Spoon Carving Workshop

By Alien Spoons

Alien spoons? Well, only because it is a memorable name and some of the knife grasps feel a bit alien to start with. You will soon get to grips with them and the focus of this workshop is learning to use safe and efficient carving techniques with hand tools - the axe, straight knives and hook knives... maybe also a drawknife on a shave horse. By following good technique you will avoid injuries and with regular stretching this will help you to look after your body as well as the tools. You should leave with the knowledge and confidence to carve safely at home. The tools are relatively cheap and easy to use in a small space. You will have access to a range of tools, but primarily use the Mora wood carving knives (106/120/164s) and be shown traditional designs for optimising strength and utility. Using these traditional tools you will make a spoon from local and sustainable fresh cut green wood - starting with a log and leaving with a spoon. From the initial splitting of the log with a froe or axe, trimming this down with an axe, and on to carving finer details and decorations with knives. Additional skills in building a shave horse and other green wood working can also be taught. This course is run from close to central Edinburgh and is accessible by public transport.  Depending on the weather it can be inside or outdoors in the wildlife garden. Courses can also be arranged to suit your availability! Please get in touch to discuss your requirements, discounts are available for small groups or multiple days. Course numbers are usually limited to five or less; individual training courses can also be arranged. What's included in the price? Kate feels extremely privileged to have worked with her hands for much of her adult life making sculpture and working stone. It has suited her practical and creative nature and has offered her the opportunity to design and make sculpture of every scale for both public spaces and private homes. She particularly enjoys site specific projects and draws inspiration from the people and environment connected to the place where sculpture will be placed. Kate says “you have to look sideways at a subject, see it with fresh eyes to bring originality and life into a sculpture, I try to create a dialogue between myself as the artist, the material and the place.” Kate has taken this idea further by creating Elysium Memorials where she collaborates with other artists to design and make artworks as unique memorials for the home and garden as an alternative to a headstone. Each one is a reflection of a life in the form of an artwork that can be kept and handed down through a family. The teaching of stone carving and sculpture brings her great pleasure too, helping people to develop their skills and watching the pleasure they gain from working stone. Kate says “I try to adjust my teaching to the student’s needs, it’s incredible what beginners can achieve if guided well. My aim is to offer a warm welcome and clear step by step instruction to suit them”. If you would like to contact Kate about her sculpture please email or ring her for a chat.

Our courses designed for beginners and all levels of skill run annually, and are now in their thirty-seventh year. Courses are held in the open-air, stone carving & sculpture workshop in the heart of Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve and in the well equipped spacious Drill Hall Stone / Work / Space. Our Tutors are highly experienced in selecting freshly quarried stone for individual ideas, 3D sculpture, architectural forms, relief carving, letter cutting, stone masonry; and give one-to-one tuition in the development and completion of individual work. Working with freestone that can be carved in any direction informed by the pure quality of light throughout the day, reveals forms and surfaces that haven’t been exposed for 150 million years, creating a more powerful and visually informed work. Portland stone, the finest of carving stones, was once an ancient sea, formed from pure sunlight interacting with calcium carbonates in sea water. Covid 19 and social distancing Courses take place in socially distanced workshops, with reduced numbers and allocated tool sets. We have hand sanitiser, face coverings and cotton gloves, but encourage people to bring their own. Protective glasses are available for purchase. Note: Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust (PSQT) reserves the right to change details of course dates, and course content. Deborah Harrison Sculpture

deborah harrison sculpture

Gloucester

Deborah was born in Yorkshire. She is an award winning contemporary sculptor who specialises in stone. She discovered stone carving in her middle years in the Greenbelt Festival craft tent. Later she went on to study Fine Art and do a years diploma in stone masonry after which she turned professional after the death of her mother in 2015. Her first sculpture teacher said stone was a perfect option as it limited the numerous creative choices she could make as she is led by the stone, using the technique called carving direct, following it’s grain, form and colour. She lives with the rocks until she sees the shape within, then carves until she reaches a skin and the sculpture takes on a life of it’s own. Her works are a unique combination of figurative and abstract forms. Deborah is best known for her alabaster sculptures and also carves in marble and limestones. Deborah seeks convergence between the characteristics of the stone, her growing carving skills and her faith. Carving with hands, head and heart to impute emotion and presence into her pieces. Notable sales have been to the NHS Trust with ‘The Hand of Fannie Storr’ a previous director of nursing, to Sir Malcolm Evans the Chair of the United Nations Anti-Torture Subcommittee, a luxury spa hotel in Portugal and CEO of a large company in the USA. Deborah won the Ashburner Sculpture Prize 2022 for her Stone Totem which was about Connectivity (see website page). Previously in 2020 she received the Sculpture Award and Guest Judges Award with the SWAC, was the winner of the Christian Arts Festival Award, selected for the RWA 168th exhibition and was also a finalist for the Chaiya Arts Awards (exhibited in the London South Bank’s Oxo Gallery). In 2019 she was a finalist for the online Covid-19 IMPACT exhibition. Deborah enjoys working collaboratively with organisations to raise access to the arts in the community. Her work was the basis of the Matson Sculpture festival where she gave workshops in local schools and talks to the community. Her work was part of a charity auction to raise funds for refugees. Deborah is based at Gloucester City Works who are based in an old shirt factory where she leads carving courses for all levels of ability and experience. She welcomes commissions for indoor and outdoor sculptures, for public and private clients.
