Learn Bookbinding - Workshops & Bookbinding Supplies. I first became interested in bookbinding at university while studying illustration. As an illustrator of books it was natural for me to want to make my own. Having the ability to bind my own books meant I was able to present my ideas to publishers as a high-quality, faithful representation of the potential published book (which is essential as a Children’s Author-Illustrator). I also became interested in self-publishing my own work as short-run batch productions and selling them via book shops and zine fairs. I learned to bind books as a student and I was aware at the time of the difficulty and expense in locating the ‘correct’ tools and materials. These problems lead me to take traditional bookbinding techniques and develop them in a way that makes bookbinding more accessible to everyone. I have been teaching my unique, user-friendly workshops for over 10 years in educational institutions and to the public and they are always enthusiastically received. I have been a professional bookbinder for nearly 40 years and in 1992 helped set up Bookbinders of Lewes. My work ranges from restoration, presentation and limited editions to special commissions for companies, institutions and private collectors. I also teach different aspects of bookbinding, individually or in small groups and belong to both The Society of Bookbinders and Designer Bookbinders, attending talks and seminars.

Over the last 16 years Bloom and Curll has traded as an independent bookshop in the heart of Bristol. Alongside selling books we have held poetry evenings, homework clubs, chess events, bookbinding workshops, writers in residence, pupils for work-experience, shared reading groups, book clubs, micro-cinema, one-woman theater and much more it has always been at these events that the bookshop has felt most alive and most of use to the community of people that have joined us along the way.

Spanish for ‘This Book’ Este Libro hand makes a range of Coptic Bound books, albums and diaries, as well as Coptic Binding Kits and screen printed textiles. Started in 2016 by me, Esther Williams, Este Libro has grown from making sketchbooks in my bedroom to curating a range of hand crafted bespoke products from my studio in Somerset. Each screen print is designed by me, influenced by abstract art and 1950’s interior design, I cut the stencils by hand and print onto cotton layer by layer, building the design one colour at a time. Us From this… School House interior…to this! When we moved into the Old School House in 2012, we could see the potential that the building had to offer. With over 40 years of our own combined experience in education, it seemed right to try to breathe new life into the educational history of the building, which had closed as a village school in the mid 1960s. We have always been interested in crafts and creative activities, including music and arts. We’ve always looked for new opportunities to learn and develop craft skills, and these have often been quite unplanned – the spontaneous purchase of a spinning wheel at a local auction for example, or the pile of bookbinding equipment we found in a local antiques store. The enjoyment gained from gaining mastery of a new skill or technique, particularly of a craft from times gone by, is a genuine pleasure, and one that we would hope to share with those who attend workshops at Old School Crafts.

In September 2021, a new non-profit organisation began operating the space.
