P400 - Asbestos Surveying and Analysis is a one day foundation level course, which provides candidates with the fundamental knowledge to start a career in the asbestos surveying and analysis professions, and as a progression route to the asbestos Proficiency qualifications. It gives candidates an introductory level of knowledge on the health risks of asbestos fibres, and how to manage asbestos-containing materials in their work. Candidates for this course are not expected to have prior knowledge and experience but having an awareness of the contents of both HSG248 Asbestos: The analysts' guide (July 2021) and HSG264 Asbestos: the survey guide January 2010), would be advantageous.

Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 sets down requirements for asbestos awareness training. Basically, any employer involved in work where there might be a risk of disturbing asbestos, such as general building, maintenance, demolition, or refurbishment, is required by law to ensure that all affected employees are educated and trained appropriately. More recently the importance of adherence to the awareness measures has been emphasised in the Health & Safety Executive’s ‘Duty to Manage Asbestos Enforcement Initiative’ and it is now clear that non-compliance will not be tolerated. In fact, several perpetrators have already been served with improvement notices, or in the worst-case scenario a probation notice, which results in an immediate and costly halt to work. Employee training is believed to be the best way to target the estimated 1.8 million workers who are potentially at risk of life-threatening illnesses following exposure to asbestos in their day-to-day work. These people include plasterers, roofers, plumbers, electricians, demolition, maintenance men and joiners but also the less obvious workers such as computer installers, ground workers, landscapers, and fire & burglar alarm installers. Aims To raise personnel awareness of asbestos and the risks associated with it. To comply with the legal requirement of The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. Prerequisites None – The course is intended either as an introduction or as an update. Assessment Delegates will be required to complete a short multiple-choice test at the end of the training. P404 Air Sampling of Asbestos and MMMF and Requirements for a Certificate of Reoccupation Following Clearance of Asbestos is the industry standard qualification for those whose work involves air sampling and clearance testing, such as asbestos analysts. In addition to holding the qualification, they are required to undertake and provide evidence of annual refresher training. RP404 Refresher is a new course, specifically designed to meet this requirement. RP404 Refresher enables candidates to revise and update their knowledge on air sampling and clearance testing techniques, and to receive a certificate of course completion by passing a written examination, which covers both the theory and practice of air sampling and clearance testing.

Asbestos surveyors, or managers of surveyors and surveying teams. Asbestos re-inspectors or anyone that undertakes asbestos re-inspections. Those who require a detailed understanding of asbestos surveying principles (e.g. asbestos report writers, architects, building surveyors etc.) Prior Knowledge and Understanding Candidates for this course are expected to be aware of the contents of HSG 264 Asbestos, the survey guide and have a minimum of six months prior experience of assisting on asbestos surveys. In addition, candidates are expected to have had training to cover the core competencies outlined within the foundation material detailed within Table A9.1 of HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts' Guide (July 2021). This may be achieved by In -house learning or through the P400 foundation module.

You will need awareness training so you know how to avoid the risks. Asbestos awareness training should be given to employees whose work could foreseeably disturb the fabric of a building and expose them to asbestos or who supervise or influence the work. In particular, it should be given to those workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades where it is foreseeable that ACMs may become exposed during their work.
