This workshop will explore artist-led practice in Edinburgh and feature an open discussion between Sierra Metro (Edinburgh) and Sett Studios (Edinburgh). Artist and researcher Chris Biddlecombe will also provide an overview of the key findings from the ‘Artist-Led Organisations in Scotland: Survey and Mapping of Activity’ research report which has been undertaken by Scottish Artists Union on behalf of Creative Scotland. About Sierra Metro is a gallery committed to artist-centred practice and our intention is to showcase and support emerging and mid-career visual artists and designers. We aim to engender a climate of flexibility and experimentation for everyone who exhibits with us, and offer broad public access to contemporary art experiences and discussions. Established in 2008 we curated a vibrant cross discipline arts programme until 2012 at Ground Floor North, The Lighthouse, 22 West Harbour Road. After a period of hibernation, we have reopened in our new Leith location on Ferry Road. Sett Studios is an artist-run studios with dedicated gallery space in Leith, Edinburgh. Run for artists, by artists. Providing an accessible and safe space, with a particular focus on supporting those from socially and financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Working to foster allyship, make art accessible, and uplift marginalised voices. Our artist community includes queer, working class, neurodiverse, disabled and POC artists. Ikigai is that thing that gives our existence a marvellous intensity, what gives meaning to life, or, as the French would say, its raison d’être. There is a fire inside us—it can burn brightly, weaken, and then reignite stronger than ever. Ikigai cannot simply be a mental concept; it is wider, deeper, and more absolute than the thinking mind. It is something to be lived, and only by living it can you truly know it. Living your Ikigai brings joy, satisfaction, and a profound sense of fulfillment. This ancient concept originates from the island of Okinawa, where iki means "life" and gai means "what is worthwhile," often described as “happiness” or your soul's mission. In this creative workshop, we will not rely on theories but instead embark on revelatory experiences designed to help you discover your Ikigai, which is, we have to say, a long journey. Through reflective exercises and hands-on creativity, you’ll paint your own Mandala of Purpose—a visual representation of what makes life meaningful for you. Join us to explore what is your soul mission. No prior art experience is needed—just an open heart and a desire to connect with your true self. Spaces are limited. Reserve your spot now and begin your journey to purpose, fulfillment, and living your Ikigai! This class is sponsored by Evoc. Join us for an inspiring and creative workshop celebrating cultural diversity and community connection, inspired by the 150th anniversary of the Heart of Midlothian Football Club! This special milestone reminds us of the power of unity and inclusion, and we’ll use it as a backdrop to create a collaborative artwork that blends personal stories, cultural heritage, and iconic symbols of Edinburgh. What to Expect: Reflect on your unique cultural background and express it through your own individual painting. Connect with others by sharing your personal stories and symbols of identity. See your piece become part of a larger collaborative artwork that celebrates diversity and unity. No prior art experience is needed—just bring your creativity and an open heart! Each participant will create their own piece of art, and together, we’ll assemble these works into a single, unified masterpiece. This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to explore how diversity strengthens our communities while honoring the legacy of one of Edinburgh’s most beloved institutions. Together, we’ll create an artwork that reflects our individual journeys and celebrates how we all belong to the greater fabric of the local and global community. Come celebrate, create, and connect with us! This class is sponsored by Edinburgh Council. It is FREE and is aimed at our International Community of the South West Edinburgh.
