We are a non-profit making organisation dedicated to teaching the Japanese martial art of aikido. Here on our web site you will find information about aikido, our organisation, and full listings of our classes and practice times. Aikido UK was founded in May 2000 by Sensei William Andrew and our aim is to enable our members to cultivate and develop the coordination of mind and body using the principles of ki. The current President and Technical Director of Aikido UK is Sensei Edward Dunne, who took up the position in 2011. At this time we offer a number of classes in Glasgow and the surrounding areas, and training is available almost every day of the week. We also have an affiliated club in Canada. It is our firm belief that everyone, irrespective of age or ability level, can experience a wide variety of benefits through the study of aikido and ki development.

Our aikido club hosts two aikido classes per week in venues in Glasgow’s city centre and West End. We welcome all levels of expertise to any of our aikido classes and we pride ourselves on being a friendly, inclusive club. Information about practising with us is available from the Training FAQ. About Us – Club Background Yudan Nashi Kan aikido club was founded in 1998 by our technical director, Sensei John McGill. The club is a founding member of the Komyokan Aikido Association (KAA). We are fortunate to receive frequent technical guidance from, and host courses with Terry Ezra Shihan (7th Dan So Hombu). The club is affiliated to the hombu dojo through the KAA, Joint Aikikai Council and the Aikikai Foundation in Japan. Our team of aikido instructors have well over 100 years of experience in aikido and other martial arts.

Sanchin Aikido UK is a study group dedicated to learning the Japanese martial art of aikidō. The group is based out of Paisley (Scotland), and currently trains twice a week on Sundays and Fridays at the Floor4orce Dance Academy (Unit 12) in the Sir James Clark Building.

Thistle Aikikai is a member of the Scottish and Borders Birankai under the technical direction of T.K Chiba Shihan. The Chief Instructor, Michael Flynn Shihan began his study of Aikido in 1982 at San Diego Aikikai under the direction of Shihan TK Chiba. He was named Shihan in June of 2005 and was awarded 7th Dan by Doshu Ueshiba Moriteru on 14 January 2018 during the Kagami Baraki celebration at Hombu Dojo. He was formally awarded his Shihan Certificate in a ceremony at Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo in November 2006 by the second Doshu, Ueshiba Moriteru. He has also received Iaido Shihan title from Mitsuzuka Sensei. Since arriving in Scotland, Flynn Sensei has established the Thistle Aikikai. He serves as the Chairman and Technical Director of Scottish and Borders Birankai. Thisle Aikikai offers beginner through to advanced classes in Aikido and weapons. All are welcome. Instruction in Iaido , the art of drawing the sword and striking a killing blow, is also offered at Thistle Aikikai. In Iaido, students learn to use the sword not merely as a tool for cutting down one’s enemy, but as a method of allowing the mind and body to become more harmonious with nature. During training, students will learn the forms of the Muso Shinden Ryu Iai as developed by Nakayama Hakudo Sensei, with a goal toward synchronizing their breathing and body motions within the techniques in order to understand and practice the efficient use of the body. Senshin Dojo is located close to the city centre of Glasgow. We provide a safe, supportive and creative training environment to study the Japanese martial art of aikido. The dynamic movements of aikido can be used for self protection and its principles can be used to develop confidence, relaxation, fitness and promote a positive mind. We principally follow the teaching and technical direction of Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan (7th Dan, Aikikai).

The club has had a long and rich history. Consistently teaching to a high standard, many students have attained the rank of black belt, and gone on to teach Aikido themselves. Sensei Matt Tennant has studied aikido for over 50 years and continues to develop his art and his students. His aikido journey started in 1958 when aikido was still relatively new to the UK and he was one of the early students in Scotland, initially studying under Tom Weir. His main teacher for many years was Ken Williams during his years with the Aikikai and later with the Ki Federation. Sensei Tennant started the East Kilbride Aikido Club in 1967. In addition to training under Sensei Ken Williams, he attended regular courses from Sensei Noro and Sensei Chiba. When the Ki No Kenyukai was formed by Sensei Koichi Tohei, the club joined through the Ki Federation of Great Britain led by Sensei Ken Williams. Originally organised in 1967 as extra training time for the Hamilton Hill Aikido Club, the first Aikido dojo in Scotland, the East Kilbride club quickly grew in numbers and established an identity of its own. The club has had a number of influences throughout it’s development. Having been affiliated with the Aikikai of Great Britain, under Sensei Kazuo Chiba, and Ki No Kenyukai, under Koichi Tohei Sensei (through the Ki Federation of Great Britain), the instruction at the club represents a deep and wide understanding of the principles of Aikido and mind/body unification. In 1984 the club left the Ki Federation and therefore the Ki No Kenyukai. Since that time the club has remained unaffiliated with any governing Aikido organisation and continues to teach to a high standard the principles of SHIN SHIN TOITSU DO(unification of mind and body) and SHIN SHIN TOITSU AIKIDO (Aikido with mind and body unified) as taught by Sensei Koichi Tohei.
