I am currently self-employed private tutor within South Yorkshire region working with a broad range of students; this also includes SEN and adult learners. I have taught all three sciences at KS2, KS3 and KS4 across several exam boards and have also taught the iGCSE CIE curriculum. I have now extended my subjects to include Maths at KS2, KS3 and KS4 and will soon be offering A-Level Maths. I also offer A-Level Biology and A-Level Chemistry tuition. I have been tutoring for just over four years now, with four years worth of teaching experience in total. I’m Matthew and I’ve been helping my students succeed at school and university since 1992, including over 13,000 hours of one-to-one tuition to over 400 students. My philosophy is: more than higher grades. I teach A level Maths and Further Maths, A level Statistics, and A level Physics. At GCSE level I have worked very successfully with students aiming for a grade 6 and above. I also help undergraduates on courses with mathematical content, such as Economics and Business Studies. My focus is on achieving high grades through understanding the material. To that end I take a very full interest in their education generally. As one student recently put it, I am “so much more than just a maths tutor”. For example I give guidance and support with university entrance, including the UCAS personal statement, applying to Oxford and Cambridge, and interview preparation, and I have personal experience of working in both the legal and accounting professions. ACADEMIC HISTORY + TEACHING EXPERIENCE I have an outstanding academic record and over twenty-five years experience as a teacher and examiner, during which I’ve received excellent feedback from my students and their parents. I have tutored over 400 students in Harrogate: that’s over 13,000 hours of one-to-one teaching since I started tutoring in 2006. FEES My fees are £220 per month, which covers four one-hour lessons and ongoing continuous support and help outside of lesson time. I do whatever I can to help my students succeed: I’ve even answered messages from a frantic student at midnight, and I’m always happy to talk to parents and guardians. We’ve been around now since 2012. Thanks to all of you that have used and recommended our resources – we really appreciate it! JustMaths was born from the passion and spirit of three full-time teachers who have a genuine belief in the power of collaboration and sharing ideas and best practice. We originally wanted to create a set of resources based around key topics – the main thing we have learnt over the years is that students need a highly focused, carefully targeted support package, giving them 200 video clips just doesn’t work! JustMaths Online was originally based around “The Top 40”, but it exploded (to support the 9-1 GCSE) into “The Big Fat 50”, and then “The Super 60”. In the 12 months leading to the first few sittings of the 9-1 GCSE, being so unsure of the tier of entry for our 3/4/5 students, (we still are now for some students!) we focused on the ‘Crossover’ topics from the DFE programme of study and the exam boards material. Covering the key topics that overlap the foundation and higher tiers is what really helped us deliver a stunning set of GCSE results in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The JustMaths Crossover package is almost expanding on a daily basis, with Seager’s voice and Mel’s resources becoming central to supporting fellow maths teachers across the country. So, if you sign your child up for a faceless brand, you are selecting a programme and you don't know who the tutor is? But you should! No really, you should: According to the governments own figures (and pretty much every international study); the level of a teacher's prior education is directly linked to the attainment of their pupils. A pupil's attainment is directly linked to how highly educated their teacher is If your child is being taught by "Bradley", who's only just finished his AS in maths (but proclaims he's "all-white at maffs"), then you can't really expect him to understand how the mistakes he makes in the way he teaches you child G.C.S.E. maths won't show up now - they will rear their ugly heads when your child is doing A-level maths. (I should know - I spend too much of my time sorting out Bradley's mistakes.) Of course, by then, Bradley will be long gone… The more knowledgeable the tutor, the better able the pupil is to learn (Wossman 2003) Incidentally, the government wanted to regulate the tuition profession. They wanted all tutors to have at the very least a degree in a subject relevant to the subject they are teaching. (In fact, they only give P.G.C.E. bursaries to graduates with a FIRST or a 2:1 degree.) That's not too much to ask is it? But pretty much all the tuition organisations opposed it… Why?
