Description

About this Classroom Training

In an era marked by growing energy demands and heightened concerns over climate change, nuclear power continues to play a significant role in the global energy landscape. With advancements in technology, there is a renewed focus on enhancing the efficiency, safety, and flexibility of nuclear energy generation. Nuclear power holds tremendous promise as a reliable, low-carbon energy source, but also comes with complex engineering challenges. However, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) represent an exciting innovation that makes nuclear power more flexible, affordable, and secure.

This 5-day course provides participants with comprehensive training on SMR technology and hands-on simulated experience in reactor operations. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of nuclear power plant engineering and operations with a focus on SMRs. They will explore the design principles, strategies, and operational considerations specific to SMRs, gaining insights into their modular design, advanced safety features, and potential applications.

Through a combination of lectures, simulator training, and exercises, participants will grasp practical knowledge and gain hands-on experience. They will develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities through theoretical instruction, practical simulation, and programming exercises.

This course will be delivered face-to-face over 5-day sessions, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 40 hours in total, 40 CPD points. Maximum number of participants: 25

TRAINING METHODS

This course is designed to foster a deep learning experience through a “learning by doing” philosophy, ensuring that theoretical knowledge is solidified through practical application. This approach is articulated through:

  • Interactive Lectures: Participants will engage with technical presentations that facilitate a clear understanding of complex concepts.

  • Simulator Training: A hands-on simulator will serve as a virtual training ground, allowing participants to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic scenarios.

  • Programming Exercises: Basic programming tasks related to reactor physics will enhance participants technical skills and understanding of reactor physics.

  • Collaborative Learning: Group exercises will foster teamwork and collective problem-solving, mirroring real-world nuclear plant operation dynamics.

  • Continuous Assessment: Real-time feedback during simulator sessions will ensure participants can monitor their progress and understanding.

TRAINER

Your expert instructor is a nuclear engineer and reactor physicist with significant international experience in the area of nuclear reactor design, safety, development and deployment, education and research. His expertise and leadership have been pivotal in developing and implementing educational and training programs aimed at enhancing global knowledge and skills in advanced nuclear technologies.

He worked as a Nuclear Power Project Officer at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna for 7 years. His role in managing the IAEA’s initiative on open-source nuclear codes for reactor analysis (ONCORE) stands out as a significant educational contribution. This project focus on developing multi-physics simulation tools that support education, research, and training in advanced reactor designs.

Furthermore, he has been instrumental in drafting high-level IAEA technical documents, reports, and training course series, which serve as valuable educational resources for professionals and students alike. His work in this area includes the IAEA’s Medium-Term Strategy for Small Modular Reactors, which is essential for guiding the development and implementation of these emerging technologies.

Before joining IAEA, he worked as a researcher at Nuclear and Industrial Engineering in Italy, where he performed technical and safety analyses of nuclear reactors using simulation codes. He also has industry experience as a Tech and Field Engineer at Schlumberger Oil Field Services in Peru, leading drilling operations at client sites.

His initiatives have significantly contributed to building a knowledgeable and skilled workforce, capable of advancing nuclear technology and ensuring its safe application. He has trained over 1000 professional all across the world.
