This 5-day advanced level course focuses on the methods and applications of petroleum geochemistry for source rock, maturity, and fluids (oil and gas) evaluation.
The course will equip the participants with key guidelines on source rock evaluation to determine the type of organofacies and deposition environment, maturity, as well as predict the variety and quality of hydrocarbons that have been generated from each type of source rock. It also provides guidelines on how to characterise subsurface fluids, including oil condensate and gas; refine petroleum systems, and predict fluids quality.
The lectures and exercises are designed to improve the participants’ understanding on how to characterise source rocks and fluids, using bulk, molecular and isotopic tools that facilitate their understanding. Some examples of topics include source rock screening analysis, optical (maturity) analysis, gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), biomarkers, isotopes and chemometrics to identify oil families, perform oil-oil and oil-source rock correlations. The exercises will illustrate how geochemistry can be used to assist explorationists in the de-risking block and basin petroleum evaluation.
TRAINING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
Understand the fundamentals of source rock, oil, and gas geochemical analysis, including their interpretive pitfalls.
Discuss various geochemical techniques, e.g. sampling, preparation, TOC determination, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and microscopy, including interpretive pitfalls.
Understand how to interpret source rock data, including source rock richness, potential and type, and how to distinguish between different types of source rocks, their kinetics and quality (e.g. oil- versus gas- prone source rocks).
Explain what type and quality of hydrocarbons can be predicted from each type of source rock.
Learn the different maturity tools used in geochemistry and how to interpret and use maturity data to evaluate thermal history of source rocks and calibrate thermal history of sedimentary basins.
Examine the different geochemical techniques used for the fluids (oil and gas samples), including interpretive pitfalls.
Learn how to perform oil-oil and oil-source rock correlations.
Understand how to assess post-migration fluid alterations (e.g., evaporative fractionation, biodegradation, geo-chromatography, and other reservoir alteration processes).
Develop an understanding on how gas samples can be evaluated.
Demonstrate how geochemistry can be used to assist explorationists in their de-risking block and basin petroleum evaluation.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The course is designed for geochemists, geologists, exploration geologists and petroleum systems analysts but could also benefit engineers, project coordinators and managers who would like to apply this branch of petroleum geology to prospect appraisal, exploration, and field development.
Prerequisites
The participants should have knowledge of basic chemistry and geology. Experience in exploration will also be useful.

Your Expert Course Instructor is a Petroleum Geochemist with over 32 years of professional experience in the oil and gas industry. He is an expert on petroleum geochemistry for exploration and production development strategies. He is skilled in geochemical interpretation and specializes in the integration of all types of geochemical data from source rocks and fluids (oil and gas), having delivered training courses to many operators and service companies worldwide.
Between 2011 and 2020, he worked for Fugro-Robertson and CGG UK Services (Robertson) as Chief Geochemist and Senior Geochemical Advisor. Prior to that, Your Expert Course Instructorwas Senior Geochemist with Fugro-Robertson for over five years. He worked extensively on a variety of single and multi-disciplinary projects worldwide, including the North Sea UK and Norway, Gulf of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, the North and South Atlantic margins, North and East Africa, the Middle East, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Mongolia, Australia and New Zealand.
He started his career as a Petroleum Geochemist, working for Sonatrach, focusing on the major Paleozoic basins (Berkine, Illizi, Oued Mya, Tindouf, Bechar), across the Saharan platform in Algeria.
He developed and maintained a high quality and competitive geochemistry business during his employment with Fugro-Robertson and CGG UK Services. He oversaw the petroleum geochemistry discipline and was responsible for sustaining business development and project management. He was also involved in the development of workflows, innovation, data quality control (QC), mentoring and training internal and external staff, project supervision, and technical / peer review for all the geochemical projects. Currently, he is a Principal Consultant.
He holds MSc and PhD degrees in Petroleum Geochemistry and was a graduate of the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom. He is the author of several publications and has been invited to present his findings and research at international meetings.
