This Focus Awards Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (RQF) is a knowledge-based qualification suitable for support staff roles in schools that directly support the teaching and learning of pupils. The qualification seeks to develop the knowledge and understanding of workers in a school setting and covers areas such as safeguarding, communication, child development, and understanding the school context. As it is a knowledge-based qualification, it can be taken by learners not yet employed in a school or those in school who are seeking a higher-level role.
Qualification Overview of Focus Awards Level 4 Certificate for Level 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF)
The Focus Awards Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF) is aimed at those learners currently working as teaching assistants who wish to progress to higher-level teaching assistant status. The Focus Awards Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF) will provide learners with the knowledge and understanding to analyse and address the different challenges that classroom assistants are likely to encounter. Learners will also understand working with individuals and small groups and gaining essential insight into supporting pupils with special educational needs (SEN).
Learner Entry Requirements
Learners must work within a school as a teaching assistant. Focus Awards does not set any other entry requirements.
Age Ranges
Entry is at the centre's discretion; however, learners should be 16 to undertake this Qualification.
Assessment Methods
Each learner must create a portfolio of evidence demonstrating achievement of all the learning outcomes and the assessment criteria associated with each unit. The main pieces of evidence for the portfolio could include:
Assessor observation – completed observational checklists on related action plans
Witness testimony
Learner product
Worksheets
Assignments/projects/reports
Record of oral and written questioning
Learner and peer report
Recognition of prior learning (RPL)
Evidence may be drawn from actual or simulated situations where appropriate and permitted by the relevant Sector Skills Council or Sector Skills Body.
NB: At least 50 hours of work placement within a school is required to accomplish the HLTA assessment. The work setting can be a primary, secondary, or special school with pupils aged 5+ studying Key Stage 1 or above.
