Overview
The only suicide prevention education programme assured by City & Guilds and The Royal Society for Public Health, teaching the theory and practice of suicide intervention skills, applicable in any professional or personal setting. Learners gain the knowledge and tools to understand that suicide is preventable, and the basic skills to help someone with thoughts of suicide stay safe.
Who’s it for?
Widely used across health, housing, social care and education, as well as call centres, emergency services and corporate teams responsible for staff and public safety. No previous experience or training is necessary.
Learning outcomes
Identify someone who may be thinking about suicide
Understand suicidal thoughts and behaviour, and the causes behind them
Confidently intervene to help create suicide-safety, using the Suicide-Safety Guide
Understand risk assessment and self-care in the suicide first aider role
Format
A highly interactive, emotionally engaging day of tutor-facilitated socratic learning, guided practice, mini-lectures, group work and audiovisual presentation, delivered by experienced suicide prevention trainers, face-to-face or online.
Curriculum
Part 1: Introduction to suicide prevention; stigma and the impact on those bereaved by suicide; suicidal thoughts versus behaviour; intention versus outcome; possible causes of suicidal thoughts
Part 2: The ripple effect of suicide; population-based prevention approaches; partnership working; working with attitudes and values; audiovisual case study
Part 3: Meeting the needs of someone thinking about suicide; the Suicide-Safety Guide; recognising and asking about suicide; understanding options
Part 4: Safeguarding suicide; suicide-safety and self-care; risk assessment; suicide and suicide gestures; further learning
